MeowTalk Cat Translator - Beta is an iPhone and Android Entertainment App, made by Akvelon. Today, it has gone through many interations by the developers - Akvelon, with the latest current version being 0.3.0 which was officially released on 2020-07-30. As a testament to the app's popularity or lack thereof, it has gathered a total of 3,980 Reviews on the Apple App Store alone, with an average user rating of 4.6603 out of a possible 5 stars.

How does it Work?

Each cat has their own unique vocabulary that they use to communicate with their owners consistently when in the same context. For example, each cat has their own distinct meow for “food” or for “let me out.” This is not necessarily a language, as cats do not share the same meows to communicate the same thing, but we can use Machine Learning to interpret an individual cat’s meows. The MeowTalk app does just that. Once you create a profile for your cat, a simple process that requires just providing your cat’s name, you are ready to start translating your cat’s meows. Several translations are already built-in but specific translations will require a little training of the app to recognize your cat’s specific meow-cabulary. If you know a translation is wrong, just fix it through the app and select the correct translation. This helps the app lear. You can create new translation labels if you don’t see a suitable one. MeowTalk learns with each translation you confirm. The vision for MeowTalk is for the app to translate the cat’s meow into human speech, giving your cat a true voice. This feature is coming soon. For now, this version of the app is restricted to text translations.

  • Definitely should stay in Beta - DISAPPOINTED

I cannot express how excited I was to hear about this app. More than one friend forwarded an article to me about this new technology. I immediately downloaded it and the first time I used the app, it worked, sort of. I created separate profiles for both of my cats. I recorded meows for one of my cats. However, I was disappointed that those sounds were not captured in the history at all. I was more than willing to pay for the premium version in order to store the recordings, but the interface of the app is so skimpy that there is no help section or FAQ section or even a way to upgrade to they are premium version. It didn’t matter because the very next time and there after I have received an error message that isn’t even grammatically correct. It says “Something goes wrong. Check your connection.” I have tried reinstalling the app and I’ve also tried creating another account and nothing has worked. It’s disappointing that this app has garnered so much buzz but simply does not work. I have a perfectly brand new iPhone and no other app has any problem with my connection. Not ready for primetime. Don’t waste yours in frustration.

    1) If you use before registering, then decide to come back and register, it does not carry over the recordings of your cats or that you have input any cats at all. 2) If you go back and ‘skip registering’, the earlier recordings and all the input cats show back up. 3) I have 3 cats, one 15 yr old cat who talks ALL the time. According to the app, all he says is Hello. Hello when he gets up, Hello when he comes in the room, Hello when he’s hungry... While it does sound closely the same, the inflection is different . His purring ’I want attention/more attention’ sound is translated as ‘I’m sleepy’. (Not ’I’m content ‘?) I have put in my alternate interpretation, but now I’m stuck with Problem #4. 4) There is no way I can save what I have recorded/documented without erasing it all in order to ‘register’ the app to me/us. 5) The choices are SO unbelievably BASIC that I have to wonder - sorry here, guys! - do you even HAVE a cat or have you lived with any cats for an appreciable length of time, really? (P.S. I am 73 and I have lived with dogs and cats since I was too young to remember so I have listened to a lot of cats.) Good luck!
  • This app is entertaining

Meows translated may not always be correct for your specific cat but I’ve got a ton of spot on translations. It’s also fun to see translations for meows you are unsure of and what you can take away from it. The one recommendation I have is for the app to allow you to change cats in the history. I had the automatic translation on (for my cat Ben) so it was constantly running. My other cat Ollie also started meowing but it logged under Ben. You can’t change the cat assigned to that recording in the history. You can only change the cat if you initiated a single recording. If that feature could be added that would be great!
  • I sure hope it’s accurate <3

I love this app. I don’t know how accurate it is, but I feel like it’s close. We have a 13 year old lady who we are pretty sure we are going to lose soon. Being able to “translate” what’s she’s saying to us is incredibly precious. Also being able to listen back to her meows is something I didn’t know I wanted or needed. Perfect timing, thank you :)
  • Problems with History

For some reason, only some of the meows I record have saved! I set up an account and have made all of my cats profiles, but I’m sad that a lot of the recordings for the app haven’t saved - especially since my cats aren’t big on meowing so it’s hard to get them to continuously “chat.” I’m not sure if anyone else has experienced this so far, but I have and am not sure how to resolve it. Aside from that, the app is cute and while it isn’t always correct with translations some of them have been spot-on. Hopefully they have a new update soon!
  • Potential for good and trouble

I would suggest adding a temperament or some other variable, selectable in cat profile creation, that would make this more accurate for each user right off the bat. My siamese mix has always had a really grumpy, fussy sounding meow. The app keeps saying “I’m in pain!” when she’s clearly happy, or just wants to be let outside. I would be especially careful with that one, or you’ll have people running to the vet saying their cat is in pain, and they know so because their cat translator told them.
  • Love it! Worth training this app

By crazy dog ans cat lady
I love this app! It works well for my kitty, Felix, straight out of the box, but after i trained the app a bit I was able to make it understand his rather unique phrases like “mommy, please help me catch that fly!” Or “tell the dog to play with me!”
  • Seems cool but I dont have the chance to actually use

    By KalebShadow0803
I saw this on tiktok and it seemed pretty cool so I decided to try it out. I tried signing up and apparently my email is already in use even tho Ive never used this before in my life so I had to use my work email oh well. When I was successfully signed in started finishing creating my cat profiles but when I tried pressing done it just said “Ooooops!” Or something so I cant please fix this.
  • Good app but needs more phrase options!

    By Brave and Shy Kitties!
I downloaded this app after seeing it advertised on social media. As the caretaker of three floofy, chonky kitties, I find it needs a few minor adjustments. First, it takes a lot of meows from your cat to understand what your cat is saying and get used to your cat’s unique meow. For example, my third cat, a black feral cat who I rescued about a year ago, has a loud raspy and slightly annoyed sounding meow and it always said he was angry or in pain, which he clearly wasn’t. On the contrary he was happily saying hello or asking for food. Second, the app needs more phrases such as: -Pet Me! -Thank You! -Coming through /Excuse Me -You Look Sad, I’m going to purr and nuzzle you. With these problems cleared up I think it has potential to be a useful tool to cat guardians worldwide.
  • Option to edit which cat is talking in history

    By Fallybally
I love this app! I enjoy recording my kitties meows and seeing what it translates, I hope that the app is learning more about my cats unique voices and cats voices in general! I would LOVE if I had the ability to edit which cat the Spain’s belongs to in the history. During mealtime both of my cats meow and I can’t switch back and forth, editing it later would be so helpful!!
