How does it Work?

The AP World Languages Exam App (AP WLEA) is a free app developed by College Board and ETS for AP students to take their 2020 AP Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish Language and Culture online exams. The app includes audio instructions and prompts to guide students through the exam and records their responses. Recorded responses will automatically upload for scoring. AP WLEA also has a practice mode for practice prior to exam day. NOTE: The AP WLEA is new for the 2020 AP online exam. It is the ONLY recording option that can be used to record world language audio responses in 2020. Previous recording options such as handheld digital recorders, computers with recording software, digital language labs, or the DAC app may not be used.

  • Glitchy App and a Hack of a Company

    By Ell Ell ;D
I’m really glad that I spent $100 for a 15 minute test that only determines whether I can speak a language; there was absolutely no written, listening, or reading section of the exam, three subjects which I have spent an entire year practicing. Thinking you can determine fluency in a language based on 5 “interview” questions and a random presentation topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the topics we’ve studied this entire year is insane. Also, the app glitched out my AirPods while taking the actual exam. As you can imagine the audio switching back and forth from my headphones to phone speaker during a test which basically determines whether my whole year of Spanish was a waste of time was really stressful. I’ve never had this happen in any other app, and I really can’t see why it should be a problem. While I applaud College Board for taking their time to formulate online exams, it’s ridiculous that we still had to pay the full amount for a test that is about a third of the time it would usually take. Sure we could’ve decided not to take the test and get refunded, but that just means wasting all of our hard work and dedication in a really tough class, essentially making it unavoidable, just like the SAT. Great job CB, you really got this whole scam thing figured out! Hope you’re enjoying your $900,000 salary David 😌
  • I’m very frustrated

    By IZ:D
I was prepared for the exam and I felt so good about my recordings. After listening back to my recording, I was about to hit the continue button, but it took me to a white screen saying that it was “processing”. It kept processing and then I was taken to a page saying that it “failed to upload the recording”. I felt so confident about the test and was sure that I would have gotten a 4 or 5, but OF COURSE THE TEST DIDN’T WORK! And of course, all that is available is a makeup test. I submitted the makeup request only to be told that I have to wait to see if the makeup request went through successfully...IN A WEEK. Now I have to wait to see if they even let me take the makeup, which is in 2 weeks. Instead of getting to relax after tomorrow, which was supposed to be my last exam, now I have to take an exam in June. I am beyond frustrated with the app. At least with the other tests now, there is the email where you can send your responses. But there’s no backup for the language exams. What if the makeup exam doesn’t work. Then all my effort in the class the entire year would be for nothing. CollegeBoard needs to fix the problem with uploading before the makeup exam. I didn’t pay $96 dollars to take an exam that doesn’t work. I will be EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY MAD if the makeup exam has glitches.
  • A real review: college board please read this

I’m astounded by the poor quality of this app. It’s like they threw this together last minute just so they wouldn’t have to cancel the test. First of all, it’s disgusting that the tests are only 15 minutes. That’s not a fair assessment of a student’s speaking ability at all. This test was so expensive they could have at least made it the full 45 minutes like the other tests are. Making the test only 15 minutes is ludicrous and makes it blatant that these tests won’t be an accurate analysis of the students speaking skills. It also makes it very clear that college board whipped together an inadequate test just so they wouldn’t have to cancel it and they could still take our money. Also, the timer on the app is so hard to access and see. It’s honestly incredible that they wouldn’t even make a decently structured format where you can see the amount of time you have left in a question. They also only have the practice test in English, which is truly astounding. They couldn’t even bother to give us a demo in a different language! Having a practice test in English does not help the student practice being in the testing environment. Overall, this app is awful and the format of the test shows that little to no effort was put in.
  • Useless, broken app! CB is disgusting and morbid!

    By Wooseok Kim
The app is basically useless until the exam day. Other than taking up my phone storage, it has no functional usage. The said “practice mode” comes with no helpful resources at all. Its only purpose is a page with a recoding button that asks you to repeat the “no cheating” statement. On the actual exam day, the test will not open unless you exit the app and re-enter. Then, you have to go through the process of typing your AP number and select the test you’re taking. The app will then take another 3 minute just to go over the instructions TWICE. The actual speaking part consists less than 10 minute, yet the directions make up half of that. The thing that really frustrates me the most is that you don’t know how much time you were given to answer each question. A ‘beep’ is all you get to start and stop speaking. Often times, I found myself getting cut off by the beep in the middle of speaking an that totally throw me off. It adds unnecessary stress to my nerve-racking brain. Overall, I deleted this app as soon as I finish the exam. I can imagine some students might ran into technical difficulties and have to retake the exam in June. This whole AP thing is just tragic. What a way the CB trying to profit from us during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After weeks and months of preparing and being nervous about this test suddenly COVID-19 takes over and now I’m left with taking this app on my iPad at home. The AP test is here and I follow all instructions given by my teacher and from the AP guidelines I set up the iPad and wait for the timer to end so that the app will go into exam mode... it didn’t. I tried again and again but no success, desperate so I don’t have to do the retake, I use my dads iPad hoping it will work on there. It also didn’t. Finally I decided to try on my phone, this was the only place that it worked. Satisfied but frustrated I began the exam, it gave me one minute to prepare and I couldn’t remember a word so I decided I would use my dictionary. My plan earlier was to use my phones dictionary and use the iPad to do the exam, but forgetting that I couldn’t leave the app I accidentally clicked the home button. Realizing what I had just done I tried to open the ap app again only for it to say my session was timed out. Yes this mostly was my fault, but if the app had worked like it should have on the iPad I wouldn’t have this problem. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else, it’s frustrating and a pain. Please fix this app
  • Exhilarating Experience 🤩🤭🤠🗿

This app... wow. I was completely ready to sit my test, I pressed the start exam button, and what happened? It kept ‘loading’ for TEN MINUTES. I took the practice demo RIGHT before and it worked just fine. My WiFi connection was also working, I even checked the internet speed, and even if it wasn’t, CB claims that the app is supposed to notify us if the connection is weak, right? 🤓 So I figured something was wrong, because it was COMPLETELY FROZEN on ‘loading’ for more than TEN MINUTES. And when I tried to tap the button again it said that it had expired ☺️ despite me being 100% ready to take the test ☺️. It then informed me that my only option was to take a makeup test ☺️ in June ☺️ funny how that works, huh? 🤪 even better— after signing up for a makeup test, CB notified me that they’d let me know if I successfully registered for the makeup ☺️ in a week 😁 what at a crazy world we live in! 🥳🤩🥶🤭🤓 I would really like to know why college board can’t just make their world languages exams compatible with the computer? ☺️ With all that 💰💵💵💷💶💰💰💵 y’all got you couldn’t figure something out? 😔 Guess y’all are getting a 1 for efficiency 🤷‍♀️🤕🔨
  • more of a disappointment than me

first of all, this app has zero functionality. its sole purpose is to record literally three or four minutes of content, and waste storage on our devices. second of all, I and many other frustrated classmates are disgusted by what cb has and hasn’t done to alleviate this already highly stressful situation. compared to having a regular, 45 minute exam like other subjects, the 3 minutes given to us that determines whether or not we pass a year-long course is devastating to the majority of students. since you all are experts in grading and all that, you know in your shriveled little hearts that a student’s all-around ability cannot be judged solely based on two little oral recordings. yes, better students will tend to have better speaking skills, but by shortening the exam to three minutes of content, all other disciplines of the course are completely ignored. you think that trudging through a year of writing and reading comprehension and audio tasks, all specifically designed for this exam, and having 90% of the exam be cancelled is a pleasant experience? i get that y’all just want our money, but you are free to leave yourselves
  • Real Review: The App Has Issues

    By DontMakeItImpossibleToPass
While I’ve loved reading all of the comedic reviews posted, this one’s a real one. This app has real flaws. The biggest that I’ve had has been detailed in other reviews: the timer. The timer does not accurately show students how long they have to speak, and the ending tone will abruptly stop students mid sentence. Additionally, I was under the impression that the app would give practice examples to help prepare for the exam. The practice exam in the app is in English, and the preparation times are not accurate to what we would have on the exam. Very disappointing. Also, I know many teachers have had problems grading the prep example questions on AP Classroom as well. All of these add up to feel like the test isn’t supposed to be passable. I thought this app would be helpful in easing the stress that many have been feeling concerning all of the College Board exams, but the uncertainty of having good preparation only increases the anxiety. This test could make or break college credit for countless students. Please try to fix some of the issues in order to adequately prepare students.
  • Thank you college board 🥰

Thank you college board for being SO KIND and making this absolute joke of an app for students to take their AP exams on this year!! I absolutely love being fluent in Chinese and taking a 15 minute test to determine my language abilities! Funny how future colleges will look at this for reference on my experience in a foreign language and see absolutely nothing!! Hopefully I’ll receive a 3 or a 4 on the test! And ohh if I’m fortunate, a 5! Thanks for putting our college credits, a few hundred dollars, and many years of dedication and learning equivalent to 1/6 of an actual exam! College board, you served 🌷🧚‍♀️🌈✨🌸 too bad we’re starving✨🌸😌💫🌷 Besides the unfairness you’ve shown students and just how much you could care less about the situation, fix the app while you’re at it, it’s not cute having it crash every time students have to launch it. While you’re at that, how about you not delete the reviews on your app and actually listen to the feedback? Hope you do better next time we have a global pandemic 💗
  • David Coleman is my mortal enemy

    By Ciderleak
I opened the app and David Coleman was there, and he called me every slur in every single language available. I’m living in fear of accidentally opening the app again and being further verbally abused. Cannot rate the app low enough. I can’t wait to take a test that’s quite literally just the worst part of the original exam (rather than literally any of the cultural/grammatical/other language aspects I’ve been studying for the past 7 years!) on an app that barely works (instead of doing the test on my computer like literally every single other ap exam this year) ! It warms my heart to know that 1) all of these helpful review videos/tests/etc could have been available for underprivileged students in all of the years prior rather than the college board just saying “lol we can’t help you guys 2) even in the midst of a pandemic, college board is still figuring out ways to screw over students and line their pockets with money! I hate it here 🥰💗✨🌺 Call me a corona patient because I’m sick of this 💖🌟🌸😍
