Great game VERY well put together

I was skeptical at first with this app. Being a long time fan of gamebooks I wasn't sure how this game would compare to some of the already known names in the genre like Fighting Fantasy. I had never heard of Tin Man and I was tempted to judge this game by it's cover (not a fan of the icon, it's ugly). However, I didn't and I'm very happy I gave this app a shot. This game blew me away, it really went above and beyond what I was expecting. The two fighting fantasy apps on the iPhone, while good, can't compete with this gamebook. The writing was great and so were all the menus and the art and interface. I understand Tin Man is working on a second book taking place in the same world, I really am looking forward to it I find myself checking the app store every few days for it. The price - simply put: worth it. I wasn't sure if the price would be a bit high seeing as both the FF apps were cheaper but after seeing all the work this game must have been to make, easily justifies the price. This is a completely new and original story (not to mention combat system as well) where as both the FF apps are just old classics redone on the iPhone with all the same text and artwork. Honestly I'd be willing to pay more for the second app just to insure the gamebooks keep coming from Tin Man. If you like gamebooks or even if they are completely new to you give this game a try you won't regret it!

Really Fun! $4.99 is not that much money.

I hope they come out with more chapters! I don't think a game this comprehensive could turn a profit for .99 cents. I mean the sad truth is apple is sort of at fault for creating an environment where people won't pay more than .99 cents for anything. That's really not a realistic model for developers to invest hours of time creating any app. Let's put it this way; do we complain when we buy console video games for $60? Or paperback books for $10? So why is $4.99 too much for a deep game like this? That said, I think the creators of this game would benefit by creating a free "Lite" version that gives potential buyers a chance to experience gameplay that would allow people to justify making the jump and purchase the full version for a measely $4.99.

    An Excellent Gamebook

This is a well thought out and well executed game book. The UI is perfect. The story is sufficiently sweeping and covers enough unique areas to draw you in and provide a sense of exploration. Nice light RPG elements make the game much more interactive than most simple Choose Your Own Adventure books. The story drives along at a pace which would be impossible to sustain in a normal electronic RPG. Well worth the price of admission for fans of RPGs (electronic or pen and paper), Choose Your Own Adventure books, the classic gamebooks, or Fantasy fiction. If you are curious, but hesitant to buy then checking out the Lite version for a taste is strongly recommended (just make sure you play all the way through the Lite version and don't pass judgement because of an untimely early demise or bad ending).

    Incredible

I was at first hesitant to buy this game for $5 since the other similar game, Fighting Fantasy, is only $3. I've been playing Fighting Fantasy, Choose Your Own Adventure, Lone Wolf, Zork, and various other gamebooks since childhood. So the Fighting Fantasy game was an instant purchase for me. That game was actually pretty cool and it brought back fond memories. After getting tired of Fighting Fantasy, I wanted more. I read some good reviews of this game and decided to bite the bullet. I'm glad I did! The developers put in a lot of work into this game and it shows. It is better than the Fighting Fantasy game in all aspects! - very interesting storyline - good non-linear structure that makes you want to explore all the paths - great dice roll and fighting mechanics - automatic inventory management - cool achievements that makes you want to play this multiple times. - the bookmarking system is an innovative way to make it not possible to "cheat" in the game like you could with a normal gamebook. Yet, it lets you avoid replaying huge sections of the game if you don't want to. What can I say? This is one of the best games I've played in the app store. The next book in this series will be an instant purchase for me.

    Great Gamebook!

I have really enjoyed reading and playing this book. I tried another gamebook on iTunes and found to my dismay that it said I needed to make maps in order not to get lost. I don't have the time nor inclination to make a map when I'm playing a game on the go on a mobile phone. To me, that's nonsense. Happily, that is not necessary for this gamebook. It is truly choose your own adventure just like the old book series used to be. You keep making choices until you get to an end. That's how it is supposed to be. I was really glad to find this series was like that and not like the other one. I will definitely get the other books in the series, and I hope more keep coming.

    Sooo Good!!

I was on the fence about this game because of the steep price tag, but once I played it I would have to say that it's worth the price and maybe even more. It's like a Choose Your Own Adventure, mystery/detective, and rpg all rolled into one and it's very well done. The store felt very hooking and the games different choices don't feel generic as I feel each decision really changes up the game dramatically. I think that if you were debating whether to get this game, I would tell you to take a chance with this one because it is definitely a quality game. I plan to get future gamebook adventure titles from Tin Man Games just because this one was so amazing.

    Very well done.

This certainly does take me back to the gamebooks I used to read a long time ago. The production values are quite high and the writing is good and evocative. I'm somewhat less taken with the combat system itself - it's not terrible, but it doesn't seem to scale very well - when everyone's rolling 4 dice, or possibly more, it gets a bit tedious waiting for someone to not roll a six, which is about the only way anything happens. It makes for several rounds of dodging, followed by a hit for a ton of damage, which might be a realistic take on combat, but isn't exceptionally exciting to tap through. Given that the iPhone does all the number crunching and there's no restriction on sticking to dice types the reader has on hand, I think there could be some more creativity applied to the combat system. On the whole, though, the experience is entertaining and gamebooks seem like a natural fit for the platform. I would recommend this and I'm looking forward to future efforts in this line.

Great story, eager for the sequel

This was a very entertaining read, with a great story and nice illustrations. There were more branching events and alternate paths than I had expected, which adds to longevity. I did not find any bugs in dialog or events, but sometimes the dice roller would not be available during combat (quick workaround is to "Use Fitness" then cancel). My only criticism is that the Fitness skill is perhaps too important to gameplay. This skill is randomly determined at character creation with a range of 7 - 12, and the game is a lot more difficult if you start with Fitness lower than 10. I will buy the sequel when it is available.

Something to consider for the price.

After finishing the current part of zombie exodus, I was looking for another text game to immerse myself. This game doesn't have the same level of immersion. There are a lot of passive writing and so far I haven't ran into a companion. It tries to be engaging by using d&d rolls for attacking creatures, but its still not all that interesting. What was really memorable to me from other game either from other companies that does text games are the illuminating 1st person stories and descriptions that make you feel like you're there. the story kind of just lacks charisma on some level. Everything is matter of fact and people seem really one dimensional. I guess since this is the first story book produced it might have gotten better over time. All I know was I skimmed most of it and couldn't even focus on the story in great detail because the writing was really passive, and described a lot if stuff that i can care less about? it tries very hard to Spend most of the pages describing the environment, but that in itself seems like a chore to read. It's still worth it to try it out.

    So so story......so so gameplay...

But enjoyable experience enough to make u want to finish but honestly nothin special. Story couldve left you more satisfied. Well made though. Next time more length more bookmarks and better story. I kept hoping the story would get deep the biggest twist I predicted before it happened. Good first try though. Would be amazing with the right story, length, and a little more changes to gameplay. 5 dollars kinda high but only for the fact that the story was fairly basic. But it can definitely be worth if it's your type of game. My first gamebook had high hopes I liked the journey but left me wanting. worth more if you keep playing to see different paths but I have so many good games the story doesn't drive me in enough nor does the gameplay. More rpg elements would be nice. Would buy another in heartbeat though if had a better story or atleast deeper gameplay would even pay more. Needs more choices gameplay wise would be really cool to be able to switch classes the way you could really play the game different. Each class with its on move list. Making some fights hard to one class and moderate to another. Everyone has to admit the gameplay can easily be expanded but still stay simple. Sadly also makes me wonder what type of books or story in games ppl have experienced if this story is great. Honestly it's written well but It never really goes anywhere special it just feels like it will.

    Not Lone Wolf

So after playing this game for around a week i finally got the ending we all hope to get. And while i do like these types of books i can say that compared to the lone wolf series, this book lacks alot of choice. For the price i dont imagine it would be too hard to mimic in some respects the various choices that the lone wolf series allowed the player to make. That said, its a decent start and i will be purchasing the second book to see if it gets better. I would like to see a less linear style of gameplay at least as far as what your allowed to do in the game. In the lone wolf books the side paths were alot more than a simple, "you stumble upon a bad guy, beat him and you can get back to the main quest." The depth of gameplay is definetly something these guys can use to improve and make the 5 dollar price tag seem a bargain. Check my review in the next installment to see if the books get better.

    Somewhat Frustrating; Overall Enjoyable

I'm currently reading/playing this book, and my character has just arrived at Eltane's castle. This is around my 100th time trying to complete this book. My character keeps getting killed. This is frustrating! The book could be made easier by having more health potions available, etc.. The writing is good, but I've noticed some grammatical errors here and there. The bookmark feature is nice. The background music does get repetitive. Illustrations are nice but need to be in color. The dice mechanics seem "rigged" because nearly every roll will have at least one or more 6's and 5's. Doesn't seem totally random. Developers might want to consider making the book easier to solve because I won't buy another one until I solve this one. What would be the point?

    Incredibly Difficult to Win

This is waaaaaay harder than any other game book I've ever played (and I've tried a few different series). Although I've restarted it at a couple dozen times, the closer I get to the end the more it reveals that I was supposed to have done somethignearlier that was completely on-obvious. You can actually make it to the last "scene" and find out you're missing something in your inventory you would've had to have taken off of a murdered man and worn - heroes don't do that! There is no common logical thread through all of the decisions, just completely random solutions to choices presented. With a game book this big I shouldn't have to play dozens of times to find out all the trial-and-error minutiae. Hopefully these get much better in later volumes. Plus, as others have pointed out, the combat system is pretty weak.

    Not very good.

Pass on this. This series is not anywhere near the best, though the publisher does have better offerings that are not tied to this series.
