Perfect pitch practice
I got this app with low expectations. I really just wanted something that would help me learn the rules and strategy because I had never played pitch before and embarrassed myself when I played with friends. I am VERY impressed. I have had no problems at all and am a bit addicted at this point. The games flow smoothly and when you choose to use AI real players can come and go and you barely notice. Otherwise you can play “compete” which basically means only real players. That is cool too. Oh and you can play with friends too. It’s cool.
Surprisingly awesome!
Very happily surprised with this app! Hardly any ads- it’s free and I can play with friends who live a town away. I prefer to play real people and not the computer people- it is a little tricky to figure out how to compete. It’s fast play which takes getting used to but you can quickly play a game while you’re waiting in line or in the car or whatever. I have found myself playing a lot! It’s improved my skills when my husband and I play a ‘real’ game of pitch.
Love this app
I really like playing with other players but when your partner is a Bot it can be frustrating. I play 10 pt team min bid of 5 and more often than not the Bot bids 8 without the Ace or the deuce or the 3. Just finished playing and we got set two consecutive games where the Bot bid 8 when it didn’t need to. This happens all the time. Pretty much wipes out any chance of winning. Very challenging, however, when there are 4 people playing.
Overall very good
When you get a chance to play with real people it’s great. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is that the when playing the computer, which is most of the time, the moves the computers make become predictable and are often very bad moves. I understand that reasoning behind why they’ve been programmed to make those moves but on an individual game level they can be bad choices. Also because of the way the computer makes moves your often able to tell with certainty of a player has trump or not and other cards they may or may not be holding. With that being said, it’s still fun to play when a real in person game can not be had, and the interface is really great. I would def recommend it to fans of pitch.
The best you’ll probably get
Pitch is a family tradition, so being able to have something like this so we can play year round is awesome! The one real downside I have with the game is playing with the computers. Often times they work really well but then probably twice per game they will throw out a 9 bid when the only have an Ace. A small complaint but nothing will ever be perfect (I make quite a few mistakes in my card playing as well.) But this is definitely the easiest way to play pitch on a mobile device, and is something I recommend to everyone who wants to play.
Very solid, with a few minor flaws.
Totally agree with the other review.. playing with humans is fantastic, fast and smooth. Playing with computers is awful. Making 4 bids when no one has even bid 2, and without the Jack as well. The computer will consistently lead a small card if they don’t have the Ace, but will then cut the King or Queen to take a non trump Ace (only 4 pts towards game). I also wish they had a rule format where the dealer can take a 3 bid for 3. Also... no smudge?! Outside of these issues, the gameplay is consistent and enjoyable, so long as you’re playing with other humans.
Great, but not perfect
I love playing this game. It's a great way to play some 4 handed games of pitch when I have some free time. It's best when there are 4 people playing because the bots that fill in empty seats are pretty bad. There are some downsides though. The chat function is virtually useless because the game moves so fast. I've only been able to play 4 handed (it's still good but I like 6 or 8 handed better). The game makes the dealer bid over the highest bidder if they want to take the bid. I like it when the dealer can take the bid for whatever it's at when it gets to the dealer.
The best available
As others have said, this is the best Pitch app I’ve seen. It’s great to play other people, but the computer players are flawed- leading with the low, trumping a hand that their partner already has won, bidding four recklessly in some iterations of the game. One thing that I find frustrating is that my game of choice is sometimes at the top of the options of formats and other times 3/4 down the screen, so one must be careful not to pick the slightly different option, like low to holder instead of taker.
Pretty good. AI needs work.
This is a fun pitch game. Very enjoyable. I do, however, agree with those who say playing with the AI gets ridiculous sometimes. The AI tends to make these high bids that no sane person would make. It gets frustrating when the AI is on your team and always overbidding with no cards. And when you’re playing against the AI it’s easy to win. Other than that it’s definitely worth having and playing.
Good . . . But Flawed
I play this game a lot. After thousands of games, I haven’t quit yet, but there are frustrating moments. For the good parts, I like being able to play what folks in my area call “Hi, Low, Jack.” It’s great to be able to play real people. When real people aren’t available, the computer fills in the gaps at the table. I can play at any time of the day or night. Also, the app keeps track of player statistics. For the bad parts, the computer players don’t play very well. They frequently spike the hand with high trump even after the hand is won by their partner, and then they lead with a low trump that gets scooped up by an opponent. They can also be manipulated into throwing a trump card just by dropping an Ace into the mix. The computer will always try to snap an Ace. Always. Also, the game randomly makes mistakes in scoring. From what I observe, it’s usually a misattribution of the Low score. I’ve often won a Low deuce, only to see it awarded to the opposing team. The hand the prompted this review was me winning king high, deuce low, and a ten of trump in one hand against my opponent’s bid. However, the opponent was awarded those cards and three points for high, low and game. This is the best Pitch/High, Low, Jack game I’ve seen in the App Store, but it isn’t without it’s drawbacks.
Many rules
Good app if you want to play many versions of pitch. Computer opponents are too predictable and often play in a nonsensical way. No holding leads on pointless hands, ie if your partner has the 8 and the king and it’s the second trick they will always play in order, so out comes the king. A human would hold it another trick in order to win points, and when you figure this out winning becomes very easy. You will only lose because there are games with really bad runs of cards and occasionally your computer partner will bid very high on nothing, even when you already have the bid secured. I’ve lost the bid to my partner playing 10 point when I had it for 7, and they bid 8, then you find out they have 4 cards, queen high. It’s good practice for newbies, but if you have an experienced player it’s flaws become tedious.
Rewards reckless bettors
I agree with other reviews that the AI could use some tweaking which is why I play with real people. The problem is though I can almost guarantee that if the person is an aggressive bettor, the computer rewards them hand after hand with A’s K’s and Js or gives their partner the complementary good cards. It gets frustrating after a while to be dealt junk 3-4 games in a row. That “random generator” needs to be looked at for sure. Oh and also the computer giving points to the wrong team? I thought I was hallucinating at first....
Scoring Issues
Overall good game & I enjoy playing often. Most frustrating issues, though, are the scoring errors. Frequently, the low point of the hand will be awarded to the wrong team. 4 times in one game I won the low of trump & the point was rewarded to the opposing team. The computer players also sometimes make some questionable decisions (like leading with a 2 after betting to start trump). I can’t complain too much since I still play the game often, but those are just some bugs I hope can get fixed.
Absolute Garbage
When starting a general game you get thrown into a game in progress and have no idea what’s been played previously. The computer players are absolutely clueless and ALWAYS play their highest off suit cards no matter the situation. They also will bid and lead a small trump suit card while holding a king or queen and rarely lead a second trump card. I’ve actually seen computer players bid and lead out the deuce of trump as the first card! It’s frustrating to watch opponents drop the low because the bidder doesn’t lead trump twice. You cannot win playing with computer players as your partner. It’s rigged to try and keep games close. Random cards do not fall like this simulation. It seems you can go forever without seeing a face card then all of a sudden you’re being dealt nothing but killer hands for a game or two. If you have the slightest inkling of basic pitch strategy this simulation will leave you extremely frustrated!
