Video Manual: How to Use the X-Plane Control Pad App

How does it Work?

For X-Plane Mac/Windows/Linux 11.00 and later:

When the Pros fly their flight simulators for currency-checks, an instructor is hiding behind the scenes, setting location, weather, and inducing simulated aircraft failures during the flight test.

The goal is to survive the flight… despite the impossible weather, aircraft weight and balance, and equipment failures that are being triggered by the devilish instructor cowering behind the pilot.

Now, you can get this experience in X-Plane for Macintosh, Windows, and Linux personal computers by running this App on your iPad or iPhone (…with, of course, a willing tormentor to set all the various failures at the worst-possible time! Or just set them yourself.. the interface is clean and fast.

Here is how it works:

Simply fire up X-Plane on your Macintosh, Windows, or Linux personal computer and Control Pad on your iPhone or iPad. As long as they are all logged into the same WIFI network, they will see each other, and: Viola! You now have an Instructor Operator Station for X-Plane on your iPhone or iPad!

Now, on your iPad, you can load aircraft, set location, set the weight and balance of the airplane you are flying, set the weather in X-Plane, see a map complete with plan and profile views to see how well you are flying your approaches, and even induce any of the aircraft equipment failures possible in X-Plane (currently, about 1,000 possible failures!)

So, with this App, you can take X-Plane from a fun flight simulator up to a pro-level training experience.. assuming, of course, that you can handle the heat.

Works great but do have a question

App works perfectly for torturing someone while flying the sim! But, why is it 3 gb installed? Is there that much bloat in apple’s sdk? Seems with the UI and functionality it should be MUCH smaller.

    I love it

It’s not pretty but it works. It’s great to be able to set up any weather or failure situation instantly without having to leave the flight.

    Looks Ugly, Works Great

Excellent tool for quickly selecting airports, aircraft, and failures in X-Plane 11. The maps and gls are excellent additions. Yes, the UI and app are ugly and need work, but it is very easy to use and convenient especially when I am in VR and want to make a quick change. I just pull the oculus off for a few seconds and make needed changes on the phone.

Useful tool for BATD CFI, needs a couple of things

I’m a flight instructor and I also teach on a Basic Aviation Training Device out of the office, and found this tool to be equal to the $2000 product that the simulator company sells, and can’t recommend it strongly enough to instructors who use simulators. One problem is that “Smoke in Cockpit” is actually a massive bird strike that causes random failures, which is excellent, but it -doesn’t- reset the wildlife setting that it changes in X-Plane, so, the next person to operate the simulator sees a flock of birds or a herd of deer bounding across the runway. Hilarious for me, terrifying for them, but, it would be nice for that feature to properly reset itself. The user interface is a good start but it needs a visual overhaul with the buttons and features arranged properly, and this will be a five-star app.

    Great app, needs new look

I love this app, it is awesome for dynamically controlling weather and time in the simulator and it is great for playing pranks on friends 😉. The issue I have with this app is it’s looks. It looks awful. It looks look you pulled it straight from the 90s. I think it would be pretty easy to give it a new interface. Just make it match the X-Plane 11 interface. Simple as that.

    Works fine but...

Needs work on interface. Buttons overlap and just looks boring. I could get everything to work, but it just needs better layout and some true UI care. Windows 10 & XP11. 5 stars if it had better layout and look.

    Viola?

I can’t find the stringed instrument section on this app The developer used the word “viola,” a stringed instrument when he meant “voila!” Meaning “there it is.”

Works well but breaks connection to Foreflight

I like this better than running IOS on my PC because this allows me to graphically reposition the airplane which I can’t seem to do when running IOS on the PC. The only downside with this app on iPad is that it breaks the Xplane to Foreflight connection so you lose position on Foreflight

    Almost There

Huge potential, but not fully working yet. For example, the nav data stopped syncing at 79%, and the EFIS & MAP work, but the FAIL options do not. I hope they fix this as I see other users are experiencing the similar problems.

    Demo?

Does this even work on the demo? I've been trying to make it work, but it won't. I do plan on getting the full version, though.

Does most of what I need.

I can tolerate the lackluster UI. The thing that really annoys me is the fact that every time I turn it on, the plane I’m flying runs out of fuel. Turning on the app doesn’t change the plane’s location or the current weather so I can’t understand why the fuel level needs to change. Even if they can’t change that, they should at least leave some fuel in the tanks. If I want to change weather during a flight, I don’t want the plane to drop like a stone because the tanks empty.

    Crashes

Can’t even use it, as soon as I open it, it crashes!

    Unstable; doesn’t get airport database

Very unstable. “Upgraded” and now can’t relocate plane (no airports available)
