Play Magnus. Carlson, AKA play best app ever.
This app in my opinion is amazing! I’ve always loved playing chess, but with a real person. My family was always looking for a chess app that I like, but I always don’t like it that much. Then my mom found the play Magnus Carlson app, It was like heaven. I’ve played it for 2 hours and more. It’s great for beginners, intermediate, and advanced chess players because you can play him at different ages. Every time you checkmate him if you want too you can move up. it teaches you a lot about chess. I’ve improved a lot. There’s also chess videos that give you a lot of tips. Some are free and some are not, but it’s worth it to purchase it. You also can learn about World Champion Magnus Carlson. I really think you should buy this app. Trust me it’s the best app EVER! I also have a note for the developers. You guys should add chess puzzles too. Your game would be even better!
Almost perfect
Ok yes I’m 15 so I’m young that also means I’m not the best at chess but my love for the games mean I lose a lot but I never give up it’s the best chess game I’ve found on the App Store but there is one small problem for the people who aren’t as good like me, the younger ages jump a lot in skill I’ve beaten age 9 before and I did pretty good I was up a rook, bishop, and 2 pawns so I won but once I got to ten it too me 40-50 matches even to make a close match so I don’t know if they are close matches I’ll keep trying but if I’m getting destroyed every time it’s hard to try over and over again but either way I’d say a 5 star game so I thank you game for everything it’s done
Love it!
I’ve been playing with the Magnus Trainer app for a little while and really appreciate its stepwise progression and creative, game-based interface. The Play Magnus app is similarly well designed and easy to use, with a great personality. I have downloaded a couple other Chess apps but this one is easily the best, both in look-and-feel and functionality. I feel kinda bad losing to a 7 1/2 year old, but then I remember he’s a prodigy and I feel much better. I haven’t explored any of the upgrade features yet. Would be nice if it had a feature where I could play with a friend.
Great chess app for all ELO levels
This app is great! I've downloaded a bunch of free chess apps on the app store and this was my favorite. I'm very much a novice chess player but I love it and am interested in learning and this app has been addictive. I'm stuck on the age 9 difficulty at the moment but I was stuck on an eight hour plane ride and played on this app most of the time lol. Would also highly recommend to download in the app store the Magnus Trainer app that they have also developed. Wonder mix of free to play and pay to play. I haven't spent money on it yet but I will soon after I finish all the free things.
Excellent game
I just recently started getting into chess and have been playing a lot and actually just got my first two wins against Magnus age 7, but every time I start a session, I’ll have one game where everything works fine, but usually the next game, it starts to lag out, some of the bugs include: -whole checkered board goes black (pieces still barely visible -starts lagging when moving pieces, and the piece is misaligned, and is stuck until the game feels like working again -springboard crashes -game crashes This happens pretty frequently, but the gameplay and all the mechanics are phenomenal and helped me learn a lot. Some ideas that would be nice, are a pvp mode (which a different review mentioned) and at the end of the games maybe have an option to see how his move was checkmate because I sometimes have a hard time trying to figure what happened. But nevertheless this is a good game
The best Chess app out there!
Most apps against the computer get boring. Playing against others is great when two people both have the time. This app does not have the feel of playing against the computer. Instead you’re playing against a developing champion. My 11-year-old is a good chess player and enjoys winning one out of three games with me every day. I enjoyed watching him get destroyed by seven-year-old Magnus. :-) I did not let him see me get beat by 6 1/2 year-old Magnus. This is a great app, I suggest it for anyone of any age or skill level.
Best chess app available
The skill levels are perfect. I have noticed that once you hit age 8, Magnus starts playing main lines. So it gives me a point of reference to study. By age 10 he adds variations to main lines. By that I mean the app is trying to show you the powers of imbalance and mild tactics. Age 11 is around a 1800 Elo I believe. It seems to counter everything it previously taught you and really makes you think, should I take this piece or not? I have yet to make it past 11. I love chess theory and this app is just perfect.
Completely hooked
I absolutely love this game and the companion app Magnus Trainer. I was completely stoked when I beat the six year old Magnus... I was looking for chess apps because of my recently rediscovered obsession with Bobby Darin and knowing about his love for the game I got interested in learning. Thank you for making it fun, interesting, and user friendly. Maybe someday with a little help from your apps, if they ever invent time travel, I might be able to keep up with Bobby!
Outstanding
I discovered this game while I was serving in the United States Marine Corps. I understood the concept of chess and played periodically but I was never really good. Honestly, this game kept me out of trouble. Instead of being a knucklehead, I was playing chess and this really peaked my interest in chess. Now, I’m teaching my daughters the names of the pieces and how to move them. This game is awesome. I am not great by any stretch of the imagination but I have pulled out some crazy upsets. I owe it all to this game!
Best app ever!
I love that there are almost no ads if any. Along with that. Im almost 15, I’ve had this game for about 3 years and i went to not being able to beat 5.5 years old consistently, to having a good chance in beating 8 years old. I know that it isn’t a great improvement in skill or very good, but this app, with a little study has improved me a lot. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.
Coach in training!
I am currently a chess coach for the school that I work at. Some of my kids are new and I recommend this app to them if they have any apple devices. I love the video training and the different levels of difficulties that come with the game! This is a very well thought out chess app! I am excited to share with my students the different lessons and techniques that I have gained from playing this app!
Outstanding free chess app
Fun and generally outstanding free chess app. It isn’t the “everything” app - unless you buy some of the in-app upgrades. This app lets you play against the world champion’s approximate skill level at various ages. There aren’t any horrid ads to wait for or to distract you with pop-ups. The only upsell you see is for added features and these are discrete. Some of the upgrade features seem interesting and perhaps worth buying. Others, not so much. Missing from this app - estimate my rating; timed play; show the list of moves; identify openings; evaluate the position; annotations; save the games in various formats. “Magnus” doesn’t resign (at the levels I’ve played. (Likely some of these features are in the in-app upgrades.)
Addicting! I can feel my brain getting bigger!
I’ve gone from zero knowledge about chess to hiding under my covers at night playing game after game. I woke my hubby one night after he heard me exclaim “YES I WON!” Oops busted! Ok, even though I was playing against Magnus at age 5- ya know when you’re a beginner it’s exciting. I am happy to report that I am now playing against him at age 6. I am 53. One thing I have learned is that I do not like that pesky knight or his friend the bishop. Unless they are mine. I want to thank Magnus, the developers of this INCREDIBLE APP. and “The Queen’s Gambit” for opening my eyes to this game; this endlessly fun enigma called chess. P.S. I don’t usually write reviews because well, laziness. I felt compelled to review this one because it’s that good.
Good app for players of all levels
I am a beginner chess player that has been playing on and off for a few years, and I really like the ability to play the world champion at all different stages in his life. It is nice that it gives you a description of how good he is at the time instead of a scale of 1-10. This is a good app and I would recommend it to any level of player.
