    A Magical Experience

A cross between Undertale, Doki Doki Literature Club, and an idle clicker game would be my best description of this app. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the style reminds me of a grim anime that everyone gets hooked on at least once in their lives. There is an odd, cultish feeling to the repeated mantras within. Instead of deterring me, it keeps me guessing for what may happen next. In order to proceed in this game, you must tap on speech bubbles and “read” an interesting choice of books in order to gain EGO, the game’s main currency. When you have enough, you speak with Es, a mysterious and intelligent bookworm with several things to hide. Each time you visit, you either learn more about yourself through thoughtful games, quizzes, and puzzles, or you learn more about the world you are in. Another character that you see quite often is Façade, a stone face that bids you to stay on the path you are on and keep yourself from going astray. A constant fight between the calculated but impulsive Es and the stubborn but good intentioned Façade will bring you towards enlightenment...or the brink of insanity. Those who love secrets, creativity, and reading between the lines, as well as have a healthy respect for choice-based and clicker games, will absolutely enjoy this wonderful, spine-tingling, and immersive adventure.

    Worth a chance

I wasn’t sure what to make of this game when I first started. The earliest personality quizzes wildly misinterpreted my answers and the results felt incredibly hollow. I wondered how much the creators knew about psychology, and if they just wrote the most ominously selfish quiz results they could think of. Still, I accepted that the game would never understand me and treated it as pure fiction. I’m glad I weathered that first impression, because this game makes great use of its medium to show escalation, and the replayable plot structure sets up the third-act twist with delicious payoff. As I learned the game’s style of communication, I was able to give answers that made me feel understood. All in all, I accept the psychological profile this game’s constructed of me, and I related terribly to the themes of confinement and frustration. One strange nitpick though: for a game about establishing one’s independence as a moral agent, the postgame writing gets REALLY codependent. It’s good waifu melodrama but incredibly poor mental hygiene, and makes the psychology seem like it only exists in a theoretical bubble without application. I worry that the game might end on a sour note by guilt tripping me for having a real life.

    Be patient.

I’ve seen a couple reviews on how they don’t enjoy their outcome or how its “boring, boring, boring” but that’s completely wrong. The story is intriguing if you are actually reading. If you are easily distracted or don’t like stories in games then this game is NOT for you. The concept they added of psychological and other things are genuinely interesting. The game is giving you answers based off of *YOUR OWN* answers. If you don’t like what they say then maybe don't play the game? The game is not going to ask for your life story. If you think the answers are too harsh or “rude” then take a look at yourself that made you get that answer, what did you pick to get that? As someone that suffers with mental problems it was kind of relieving that a game was able to see/understand what i felt. Of course, i am NOT recommending you to self-diagnose yourself just because you got a “you are are depressed aren’t you” answer but to me, it did help me understand more of who i am. Again, if you’ve made it this far, if you are not patient to wait for EGO or will not be satisfied with your answers DONT download this game.

    Beautiful Game

When you play this game it feels like you can relax and be transported into a whole new world. In the beginning of them game you would meet a stone faces wall named Façade that keeps you on the path to finding yourself. Then as you go on you start collecting thoughts which gives you a currency called EGO. Once you get enough EGO you can visit a girl named Es and she’ll help discover who you are as a person, while your learning more about her. The more EGO you collect the more times you can visit Es to discover more about yourself, and more about her. The game is mostly Black and White and has a manga type of theme to it, also while on the way you can collect more EGO and get more books to get more EGO. Es is a character that also talks about some deep thoughts and this is a way to help discover more about her, and she a big bookworm. ALTER EGO is the best game to play if you want to get away from life for a bit, and it has a great type of Zen music. I totally recommend this game to the people that want to get away from life for a bit and just discover about themselves as a person.

A clicker idle game about Freudian psychology.

Basically, you click on bobbles of meloncholy thoughts and read books to earn points to talk to a girl named Es who gives you personality tests and you get to decide whether to side with the super-ego (societal expectations) or the id (impulse) or neither (the ego, the mind as it perceives itself) if that sounds interesting to you, then I can’t think of a reason why you would not like this game. After I got the ego ending, Es asked me if I had read a book with any characters like her in it. I said yes, because I thought that that was what she wanted to hear. Then I felt guilty for lying. Then she asked me if I had read a book that she lent me, I didn’t. I didn’t want to lie to her again. So I told her no. Then I tried to restart the game so I could tell her the truth the first time. She didn’t want me to restart. So I decided not to. This game made me feel obligated to a fictional character who I have spent less than 3 hours with in real time. So at least one of two things are true: 1. I am easy to manipulate. 2. The storytelling on display is excellent.

    Beautiful Game

I love this game. A lot of clicker games get boring really easily but this one just makes me want to play even more. Smart game idea actually, you make the player chase what it most desires, to know ones self. This game can put you on the spotlight and spill out all the dirty truths about your personality. A lot of people just want to hear the good things about themselves but this one includes the good and the bad. This game is making me realize that I’m not perfect. From what the advice is telling me is that I need to stop setting my goals to high and let lose. I can completely understand that, I have a tendency to put on a mask and sometimes “fake it till you make it” if you will. I spend a lot of my time in silence so I have thought about my life plan without even considering that life takes you through a lot of twist and turns. Thank you for making this game. It’s helped me with self discovery. Of topic but this game gives me serious Coraline vibes lol. I recommend this game to the ones who want to be grounded. Props to the developers. Thank you!

A therapeutic adventure of self-discovery and reflection

The artstyle alone when starting the game should be all that is needed to tell you about the game you’ll be playing. The character, Ego Rex, feels like a surreal and surrounding entity when it talks, even if it makes no audible sound. The other character “Es”, I think is their name, is the mold for the reader and is how we communicate our inner most thoughts and put them on display for Es to elaborate, analyze, and shape her world view. The dominating dark contracted by the small amount of white colors when the thoughts and quotes come towards you feels intense and every time you tap one, you feel some anxiety, especially when they pick up in speed every now and then. It feels very desolate and isolating, like we’re the only people there. Es is the one that comes up with your personality and inner most insecurities, depending on your answer. It’s a idle clicker game but for self-reflection. If you want the answers about yourself, you’ll have to look inside you and type them or pick an answer.

    Worth the wait

I don’t often write reviews, but I felt that I need to write this one. I very recently reached the final ending of the game and I just have to say that I trielt enjoyed every part of this game. The music was peaceful yet evoked a feeling of mystery. The graphics were simple and added to the melancholy aura. The game in and of itself was thought provoking and asked the “wanderer” to look within themselves in order to progress the game. The three endings were really beautiful and I loved how the choices that the wanderer made directly affected the gameplay but the true ending was really worth the wait. Over the course of the gameplay, I became rather attached to Es and was saddened each time that I had to restart, but the true end was satisfying. Other people may say that it takes too much time to rack up enough EGO to play the game, but I believe that the game would be too short if it were too easy to gather EGO. I thought that the game was perfectly paced and kept the reader in suspense with the three different endings. 5/5 nothing less :) <3

Best game I've played this year

First I’m gonna start off by saying I’m one of those types that sees a game and says ”Oh this game looks cool I’m gonna download it to see if I like it” and even when liking those games I never leave a review, so me just starting this should say something. Another thing is I liked this game so much I would LOVE to play another game created by these people. Now to my actual review. This game is perfect for those looking for more insight into themselves and looking for something a little extra like DDLC extra (doki doki literature club). This game branches off into three different paths and your choices will affect the outcome. I started off with the bad ending and original thought that what I had done was a good thing but after unlocking what I’m gonna call the true good ending I know for a fact my first ending was wrong. After unlocking the true ending I was left smiling for a couple of minutes. In my opinion only the best of games can create that reaction and I’m glad to say that this one was one of them.

    Hello

Alter Ego has black, white and blue for there colors, which I really like. The art is an 8/10 because it’s very pretty to look at, but the perspective and how 3d it is to its surroundings is a 7/10 other than that it’s really good. The plot is an 8/10. The books you collect and can read and how you figure out who you are is cool. I’m not sure if I can call it plot, because a lot of the game is like that lemonade millionaire game. The depth to it is well made, but I could think of a lot of other mobile games that have a better plot. The music is a 9.5/10. As you progress through the game you get a lot of deep stories and the music makes the plot more captivating in that way. Also, the music makes you understand the mood of the game more; it’s really good music. How engaging the game - 9/10. It’s a lovely game to play; while you can make choices throughout the story. One thing about the game is that you gain points from reading more books, which gains you more points by reading those books, but you have to wait a long time to get enough experience to get the the plot again. This I would say is a bad thing about the game, but if you could finish the game in a short amount of time, then it wouldn’t be as good of a game as it is, so that’s why I gave it a 9/10 instead of an 8/10. This game is definitely very well made compared to other mobile games and I would recommend you to play it. 9.5/10

Beautiful, yet horrifying. Serene, yet chaotic.

This game isn’t like other games, when I first opened it I expect a normal TapTap game that I’d play for all of a day or so and then delete, but then it turned into so much more. The personality tests take on a form that makes them more personal to the being doing them. They introduce a mighty being that constantly tells you not to go against the grain and a unsympathetic girl, ES, that turns out to be more of a lost lamb finding her answers with you along the game. They are constantly fighting each other, the mighty being telling you not to trust ES and ES showing dissatisfaction towards the mighty being. The way to progress is either to unlock books and allow it to grow over time, tap the butterfly that’ll sometimes appear in ES’s library and watch an ad or you have to tap on the speech bubbles that’ll appear on the main screen slowly moving towards you. The speech will change as you progress through ES’s personality test and will fit your results. I’ll be honest, some of those bubbles made me flinch because of how they dug into old scars. You might say “why it’s just a game” but in my opinion you need to make this game your story. Not a story you want to see every ending to or see the happiest ending to, make it yours. That’s how you’ll truly experience this master piece. Unlike other reviewers that've played through several times I will not get every ending, but I will get *my* ending.

    A relaxing, thought-provoking game

This game is a mixture of idle clicker, personality test, and sort of a meditation tool on philosophy. Sort of, for the last one. You are in a hall and progress slowly by earning EGO. EGO is your currency to level up your idle-currency-makers which in this game are books by famous authors that ruminate on matters of self and the meaning of life, love, and humanity. Unlocking a book gives you a brief synopsis and you level up by reading a “page” (you don’t read the page actually). When you’ve hit a benchmark, you are given a meaningful quote from the book and proceed to its next “level”. When you have attained enough EGO you are able to talk to a mysterious librarian that seems as trapped in this world as you are. Im these brief exchanges she talks to you about matters of existence and philosophy, and sometimes allows you to take a personality quiz that gives you results based on your answers. The game has a very soothing melancholy feel to it to really get you into the mood of some solipsism. My only hang up is the fact that the ad banner at the bottom greatly detracts from the mood it’s trying to set. I’ll stick around and see where this game takes me.

    Be careful

This game is good, wonderful. I would have given it five stars but... It is disturbing, even for me. It isn’t disturbing in the typical sense, and I would say this was just me, but another person experienced it as well. The reason I am a bit wary is, well... because I have become attached to Rs, even though I just finished part one. The other person that I mentioned made it to the end before realizing their attachment. At first I went out of my way to avoid interaction with her, even if the game was a bit boring otherwise. First it was wanting more tests, which one shouldn’t take unless their head pulled out of their butts; then came the eerily accurate whispers, a result of the tests; then came wanting to see Es, to hear her thoughts and answers, her approval. That was what made me realize how dangerous the game was, having the dark corners of your mind pointed out and probed while developing a dependency on a most likely sociopathic schizophrenic chunk of data. This game is a mindfrick and a half but is one of the best games I have ever played. Instinct versus logic, which one will you pick, I wonder?

Innovative Concept, Decent Execution, Mediocre Content

The concept of the app itself is really cool. Using two characters to portray the internal conflict of the “self”. It relies on some dated concepts, but makes for a cool way of encouraging some introspection and learning in the reader. Also gives a great summer reading list. And the app itself works nicely, so decent execution as well. The problem lies in the fact that, in order to progress in the game, you have to spend a LOT of time watching ads, or else pay a disproportionate amount of money to speed things up. All this for what amounts to a few conversations and personality tests. Honestly, by the amount of ads or money you have to watch/pay to finish the content, this unfortunately came off feeling much more like a money grab than anything else. I will say the content was still fun to play through, hence the three stars, but the game definitely needs to be rebalanced to reduce the necessity for so much ad watching, as the content is not extensive or gripping enough to warrant it. Only download if you’re fine with coming back to it every few days to see how much currency (“EGO”) you’ve accrued. It’s not worth all the ad watching you have to do to actually have somewhat-continuous play.
