Don’t call it AI then stack the deck

Anyone else notice the card that comes up when it’s your turn first? Nearly always a face card.. every 10th one is an A,2, or 3... nearly never a 5-9. I’ve got about 120 games in (60 on the “hard” level). I’m batting around 60%, but it takes some quick work in the first 3 turns of the hand or it’s time to start dumping your highest cards. AI knocks quickly.... too quickly... too often. The deck is rigged as well. Throw away a 9 and two come off the top of deck right away. This happens very often. As others have previously stated, the best strategy is to undercut AI. It’ll knock ASAP in “hard’ setting. Recently, I came back and won after being down 10-95. AI knocked twice (in a row) before I drew a card, but I undercut and knocked my way back. TIP: if you get deadwood to 5 or less, go for gin or Big Gin. It doesn’t, so you should. Developers should not have it auto arrange melds like it does. They should also not call it AI. I just learned the game and haven’t tried all the apps out there, but I’m giving this rating of 2 stars for the obvious rigging. If you can’t build a proper computer program, don’t call it AI and stack the deck.

It’s the only gin rummy game you need.... the dealer never cheats either .

Trust me--these guys know what they're doing. I have to admit I played this game for days before I realized that unlike “500” and other versions, Aces are only low, melds are not valued by contents or scored in any way. When a player calls Gin or knocks, all unattached cards *from both hands are deducted according to face value ..... *usually less from the player who knocks 1st but not always... And here’s where I’ll let the app directions explain it further since I’d never heard of knocking until this game. But it all made sense quickly and I was hooked. At first I wished I could arrange the cards in my hand manually, but I’m sure the clever people behind this app will develop that option and in the meantime it’s kind of nice to have it done for you. This is the only card game I play. Wishing same people would make a few others. They sure as heck know what they’re doing.

    Gin Rummy

I am really enjoying your version a lot more now that I’ve figured out why at the ending I wasn’t penalized for certain cards after my opponent knocked out. The faded cards left in my hand were able to be played on my opponent’s points...as in a live game of rummy! I was upset in the beginning when I thought I should have lost because I held more points after the knock than did my opponent, and yet some cards were faded out leaving me with less points in my hand thus winning the game. NOW I see what is going on, WHAT FUN!! I do find it frustrating however, that I can’t move the cards around in my hand! I could have broken up my runs and made 3 & 4 of a kind thus rummying out sooner. Let’s work on this, okay? Other than that, it’s a super game! I really wish you would allow us to make our own points instead of you switching our points around. You have lost me a few game by doing so.

    Fun but not realistic!

I have the pro version without ads and different levels. It’s a fun time killer and the game play and graphics are top rate. However don’t get this if you want to replicate real play. I never played the real game and after doing so it’s obvious this is way off in decision making ( A I ) by the App. Read the negative reviews for details. On the other hand it’s great fun and you can learn to beat it more often than not. I’m at a 67% win rate on the expert setting. Fun bit of trivia. Before the digital age and online World Series poker players in their youth would practice poker by playing skilled rummy players. It’s all about being able to count or keep track of cards dealt. That’s how to win consistently.

    Needs more sorting options

I’m let down by this app. I hoped that with purchase the statistics would be something valuable- insight into how I play- but it’s just a tally of wins/losses at each level of play. I don’t like that you can’t alternate who goes first- like you would in a real game where you alternate dealing. Random is just strange. And all for either me or opponent is too. I really really wish that there was a way that I could sort the cards how ever I want to. This game arranged the melds off to the side and doesn’t allow you to choose what you want to keep over there if there are multiple options. I know it’s only $3, but I wish I had wasted it somewhere else.

    You must have lost....

...my first review! Ok, here we go again. I said all the nice things all the other reviewers have posted. But I have a big BEEF! (2,000 lbs deboned, please!😄) I win regularly....good! Keeps me interested... BUT, when I KNOCK, and the ‘other player’ has the same wood; it gets the UNDERCUT .....I SHOULD GET THAT EXTRA 25 points because I Knocked! As it stands, ‘other player’ wins that 25 points EVERY SINGLE TIME we match wood! It’s just not fair!!! UNDERCUTTING should go both ways! Especially for the knock/winner of that hand. If the one who knocks; matches wood, then the undercut points should go to the KNOCKER! That’s how it’s played in the real world....

    Addictive BUT Rigged

I like this game. You paid for the extra levels. The rest you pay for is just the options which is not a big deal. What I hate about this game is that on the hard level and at tim s on normal level, the computer generated shuffle and drawing of cards s not random. Almost every card that I toss out is picked by the computer hand. When ever I throw a card out the next card is get is the lower or higher suit card. That is not random. It occurs over 95% of the time. This l are to the computer deck to get knocks very often I’m a pretty good player and can only play on the hard level. Easy level is a joke. At least I can reset the game to a new game if I feel that my game is total rigged, therefore not skewing my stats. Is it worth paying for the added level and options. It depends if you like the game at the free level. If yiu ant t get a bit frustrated, then definitely pay.

    I’m embarrassed I paid

I enjoyed this game up to a point. But, the “Hard” level, which is the highest level, kinda cheats. Ok, it cheats a lot. It dismays me that I can only make one or two plays and the opponent knocks with a gin. I have virtually no chance to win at that level. Seriously, the odds of a real person, in a real deal, getting that many good hands (9/10x) is astronomical. At the medium level, it’s a little more fun. But, then today, I discarded a 7 of diamonds and just two plays later, that card shows up as the opponent’s discard. Really????? I just discarded that card and my opponent draws it? How is that even possible? I got a little mad when that happened and thought what I’d do to a human opponent who did that. That move (and the cheating at the Hard level) have spoiled this game for me.

    Needs work

The first problem, you should be able to manually move your cards around. But you can’t. There was an instance where I should’ve had Gin and the program did not see it. The computer tells you if you have gin, I had no choice but to knock. Even though I had Gin. I have a screenshot. Another problem is, if you have two runs going, with two different suits, and you pick up a card. The program then rearranges them to sets (ie 777 and 888) which may be the best for points value. However maybe that’s not the route I want to go, because of cards that have been let go or cards that I know are dead in the pile. And when that happens you have no idea what the card was that you just picked up, it’s not highlighted or anything so you have to sit there and mentally sort through the cards trying to figure out what card you want to discard. And the final problem which I just saw the AI do, Was he had three or four of the nine’s, and then he started discarding them? Because I had discarded them so I knew when I let go of the third one, oh shoot he’s going to have three nines. He picked it up, and then later started letting the nines go. OK well you could say maybe it didn’t go with this hand, well I called Gin and There was no reason for him to let those 3 nines to go. The next highest card he had in his hand was a six. And he only had one set of melds. So basically you’re playing with an idiot and 9 times out of 10 you should be able to knock or call Gin before it.

Pretty decent game but dumb AI

This is one of the best gin rummy games I’ve been able to find in the App Store. That being said, it’s pretty easy to game the computer into losing every time even on the highest difficulty. If you are more aggressive about getting rid of high value cards then you are about trying for melds in the 9-K card range, typically you will pick up some medium value melds along the way and end up with pretty low dead wood. Then rather than trying to go for gin, if you get rid of your highest value card every turn your dead wood will almost always be less than 7 by the time the computer knocks. This means maybe 65% of the time you win the hand through undercutting the computer and get 25 points plus the difference in your deadwood. The computer almost always knocks before getting gin so the other outcomes are the computer wins the hand but only gets the difference in deadwood (which should be a relatively small amount) or if the computer gets a good hand and knocks early you might lose the hand by a lot but you will almost always win the game through undercutting. I haven’t lost yet. But the reason I say all this is really to let the developers know cause I hope they improve the AI. Any human player would learn to stop knocking and letting the other player undercut them.

    Pretty Good

The cards and the overall design is crisp and nice looking. The setup for the most part is good. However, the sounds are not up to par with the rest of the game. For example, the cards being dealt sound like a cartoonish whip, which becomes a little annoying if you’re playing more than a couple of games. And who doesn’t? Yes, you can turn the sounds off, but why not just have better sounds instead of forcing us to turn them off? As for the play, the option to select an independent mode of play whereby you can decide for yourself when to knock might not be possible - but would be fantastic. This would make the play seem more realistic. (Yes, knocks can be ignored, but why would you?) Having the app tell you when to knock takes the challenge and fun out of the game. As it is, the app already places my cards in order after I draw - so am I really playing this game, or is the computer playing it for me? Another issue I have with the play is that when you decide to discard one that’s of no use to you, the game invariably seems to suddenly and miraculously present the cards you would have used/needed had you kept it. This doesn’t happen every single time, but at least 75% of the time. Perhaps these issues are the bane of computer card games. Maybe I should stick to playing Gin with actual people.

    Predictably stupid

This game is the more simple of gin rummy games available and that’s why it’s a better game. For for that I give it one star. It’s also affordable and for that I give it one more star. Beyond that the algorithm the game uses to play is predictably stupid. No real person that I have played with plays gin rummy the way this AI does in the app. And that style of play gets old very fast and actually starts to make the game feel less fun because there’s really only one or two ways to win when playing against the computer. Reality there are many ways to win and bluffing is not anything the AI can handle. If you play the game the way the AI does you may actually be able to beat it but if you play the game any real human mate you’ll always lose. And for that it doesn’t get any more stars. The difficulty setting just determines how stupid the algorithm was going to be or rather how predictable it will be. There’s no challenge. I how the game thanks there’s very little reason to continue to play it. Aside from that the knock button is irresponsibly placed over melds and cards of the player so that if you don’t precisely tap the knock button you could end up tapping one of the melds underneath instead of knocking. There is clearly space on the far left in the middle for the knock button to show up so you don’t accidentally hit one of the cards in the mail when you’re trying to hit a knock button.

This is not Gin and not very good

There are huge flaws in the system. The computer draws far more cards than any rational player in an effort to amass low point cards in order to knock. In this game, you can always knock with ten or fewer points and an under knock is over rewarded with 25 points. When I play real Gin, we use a second deck to determine what the maximum knock point total will be in this hand and award only 10 points for an underknock. The key to consistently beating the game (65% of the time when set to hardest) is not to knock when you can and try to lower your unmelded point total while waiting for the computer to knock. I win most games by underknocking the computer, something that should be rare. More significantly, I have never been under knocked by the machine after playing thousands of hand while I underknock the machine thousands of times. Finally, the biggest issue is that it has redealt me the same card that has previously been discarded; there is no integrity to the game. It also seems to frequently throw a card that you could have used until your last discard; seems programmed to taunt you. A well designed game should show you the remaining cards in the deck after someone wins the hand to prove the cards are really available. So why do I still play? Because I win even on the hard setting.

It's so fixed, it is hilarious

It is like random, my buns!! Just play it for a while, and you'll see how obvious the game is depending your selection of cards. When you decide to get rid of a set because the card you are waiting for is not showing up, watch what card the game throws right after!!! 🤣🤣 Or you decide to wait to complete high numbered sets and it only throws you smaller cards the entire game which never does otherwise. Or all of the sudden knocks you with a fast game also when you are waiting a little longer for those high sets which also almost never does either. How convenient!! It is hilarious!! If I were in the casino, I would be denouncing it for scamming players 😆. But...oh well...is free, and fun right up to when your brain can't take anymore playing it dumb. If you like a basic card game and you don't mind winning most of the time on a game developed more with a no human left behind mentality, this is for you. Fun, but don't expect much brain exercise!!
