    The Best Chess App👍

It’s simple and easy to understand. You get leaderboards from skill to wins, and you get to play unlimited games with people. It’s simple, easy to play and learn chess multiplayer, and has options to play a solo match’s against computerized opponents to strengthen your skills on both white and black. I’ve honestly strengthened my skills at this board game just from this app. The only money you’ll pay for it would be to remove ads or get another board for 99 cents, which is a lot better than spending 8 dollars on just boards, stats, etc. The only thing I crave to be added to the app is more positive ratings☑️

    Lousy turn of events.

I love this game, but lately I have been having way too many troubles with it. Before a player would have to move within 5 days or lose. I have had players who no longer move, yet they stay onl my game. It is quite irritating. About ten of them tried to sell me on the wonders of Bitcoin Mining. When I said “Not interested” they were somehow able to disable the game. I just tried to dump the app to get rid of these non-players. I must have hit the wrong button, because now my game is active, but it is not on my screen. How do I fix these problems? I want the the game on my phone, but I want these disabled games gone. So annoying. EllieA

Major Hacker Scams and fake losses

I’ve read a few reviews about game crashes and I’ve had it happen a couple of times, but that’s not my biggest issue. My issue is to insane amount of people on here trying to dupe you into a crypto currency scam. And you make matter evens worse, somehow once you flat out tell them no they end up blocking you and you get docked a loss on the match somehow!!! I mean it’s only a game, but I have 8 losses and half of them are from games that haven’t even finished because they scammer hasn’t gone yet but somehow they give me a loss on the record. Y’all need to add a report button so we can report these people and get them off the game, and fix your win loss mechanism. To get these random loses when games aren’t even over seems like the easiest thing to get right. And yet somehow here we are. For anyone looking to download this game... rule #1 to follow. If someone sends you a message... do not respond. They are a scammer 99.9% of the time and you will get a loss for no reason.

    Free but unstable

The app is a fun and free chance to play chess with other players. That said, I have a few criticisms. First, if you don’t have Facebook, you’re kind of out of luck in terms of changing details, like a picture, on your gamer profile. Second, the app corrupts a lot of games. I’ve had more than a couple corrupted, which was a bummer because I was off to a great start. Third, the app, at least mine, freezes often. Fourth, the help buttons in the app are not helpful. Fifth, the chat feature is cemented to a specific game. So, if you close/clear the game from your history, you have no way of reading or replying to a message. So, fun, free, and simple, but you do have these issues to work around. Just wish they would actually take the time to work out these kinks.

    Free version is unreliable

Have loved using this app for a couple years. Very simple to use. Easy to challenge friends you know without both of you having to be online at the same time. Problem is reliability as others have noted. Games become corrupted regularly. Don’t know if the paid version is more reliable but my friends and I are going to look for another app because of how many games we lose as they become ‘corrupted’. And as someone else noted if they started another game for you where you left off it wouldn’t be a big deal but as it is that doesn’t happen and it’s frustrating to play a game over the course of multiple days and be on move forty something and lose your game for unknown reasons.

Developers clearly don’t care about this app

The Zynga folks must not care about this one anymore. Games always get corrupted. I have checkmated people, only for it to show that it was their turn (when it was 100% a checkmate) and then if I wait a few days and end the game, I get tagged with the loss. So there are games that are just sitting in limbo because of that. Also, can we talk about the ridiculous amount of spam/bots and scammers that play this game. I don’t chat with people I don’t know, but there will always be some that start games and try to hook you with a spam line. It’s out of control. Want to like this game because it has one of the better layouts of chess apps, but it is way too buggy.

    No avatar w/o facebook

The app is pretty good in itself, but if you aren’t connected to facebook you can’t have an avatar picture at all. That’s just unfair. I would like to not be a grey horse head. Please make that feature available. From the other reviews i’ve seen about ads and crashes, I haven’t experienced any crashes and the ads aren’t really that bad of you’re not trying to play a game in one sitting. I tend to play a move and then leave it for a half hour or so. But I could see how having an ad after every move you make could get annoying if you’re playing the match straight through. More importantly, let me have a profile picture!!

    Post-Update Woes

I loved this app before the recent update. I’ve never had an issue with scammers, and I usually have ~20 active games at a time. The only thing I didn’t like was that it prohibits any player from making a move that puts them at risk, but I rather like when opponents don’t see the trap and lose their king. That’s just me. However, the update docked 4 stars just like *that*. Obnoxious ads after every single move, which is absurd when playing against a computer! Not to mention it now costs TEN DOLLARS to remove the ads when there weren’t any previously. Ridiculous. I no longer get notifications when players make a move, so I have to frequently open the app in hopes I have turns to take. Also, the chat feature has a completely white text box when typing so you can’t see anything you write until you hit send. I’ll give this app five stars when it hits the undo button and gets rid of all these new “bug fixes and improvements” *rolls eyes*.

    Not what I expected

After playing words with friends for so long, I expected much more from this. Upon download, I chose to link to Facebook so I could play with friends( like the name suggests) and was severely disappointed. I linked Facebook only to find not a single one of my friends was available. Nor could I invite Facebook friends. The only person on my list of friends was some random photoless entity named Brandon. Although I do know a few Brandon’s…. This was none of them. Additionally, the user interface and options are not as customizable as one would think reading the description. I will say that the game itself works as a chess game if that’s all you want. If you expect to play with your friends, this game isn’t it. The game needs a serious overhaul if Zynga plans on this game becoming even a tiny fraction of what WWF has become. Please address the connection and crashing issues immediately. What a shame.

Terribly glitchy, don’t pay for this.

I upgraded the app to the paid version to escape the barrage of obnoxious ads. But despite contacting tech support over glitches, they do zero to improve the app. It no longer provides a notification after my opponent’s play, so I have to constantly check back. It will not allow a change of personal information, screen name, etc. The messaging system is invisible to me as I type a message to my opponent, so I have to hope I typed it correctly before sending. It often takes a long time to update after my opponent has played. It is a great way to enjoy chess with friends and family, but the app is in terrible need of repair. Tech support replies with something like “yes, others are having similar problems, please be patient” but nothing is ever fixed. I need to find a better app for chess. You should too.

Save your money, don’t buy this app

This is a fun app, but recently there have been some performance issues that don’t seem to be being taken care of. Lots of the games end as “corrupted” and a few don’t let you make a move. Screen will say it’s your turn but you can’t make a move. I’ve informed Tech support on multiple occasions and there go-to reply is “uninstall and reinstall the app”. This doesn’t work but they will tell you it will over and over again. When I asked for a refund, they denied it and offered a bunch of legalese as the basis for doing so. Basically, this is them showing you a finger (I’ll let you guess which one) and saying thanks for the cash chump! There a better apps out there that offer tech support that actually works and respects the customer, don’t waste your time with this one

The ‘50 move rule’ applied incorrectly. Frustrated!

I was in the middle of a fantastic 112 move game, and the game ended with a ‘forced’ agreed draw by the App. My opponent lost his last piece at move 85. By the rules of Chess, I should have had 135 moves to checkmate. I was 9 moves away from checkmate?!?!?! I invested a lot of time into this game. Very disappointing!!! The rule should be applied correctly on this App. Player name: Boris S. For Reference: The fifty-move rule in chess states that a player can claim a draw if no capture has been made and no pawn has been moved in the last fifty moves (for this purpose a "move" consists of a player completing their turn followed by the opponent completing their turn). The purpose of this rule is to prevent a player with no chance of winning from obstinately continuing to play indefinitely (Hooper & Whyld 1992:134), or seeking to win by tiring the opponent.

    Unreliable and ugly

Unlike Words With Friends, Chess With Friends looks bad and barely works at all. One has to pay for any appearance other than the default, even though one has to tolerate an advert after submitted no each move. But the real disgrace is that games get corrupted incredibly frequently. I've been playing for about a week and in that time fully half of the games have become corrupted at some point, meaning that further play is impossible and one is left hanging unable to complete. It's hard to understand how corruption is even possibly given that the move history and opponent data is still fully available. What could not be reconstructed from that? Frustrating. I'm switching to some other internet chess app. This is painful.

    Cheaters & Corrupted Games

I’ve played this app for almost a decade, had an account since 2011. Over the past year it has declined so much that I’m going to switch platforms. I’ve noticed that in games where I make moves that clearly show my advantage to win, the game suddenly becomes “corrupted” and it counts for nothing. I know this is a form of cheating because it has happened with particular users multiple times, always after I gain the advantage, and then never happens with someone else. I’ve played over ten games with one user and it has never happened. But 2 out of 3 games with another it became corrupted after I was about to win. People have figured out how to corrupt a game and have it not count or impact their record. Destroys the app for me. HATE THIS!!!!
