How does it Work?

Take command of a fleet of powerful starships in this adventure-driven strategy game from legendary designer Sid Meier. Travel to new worlds, completing missions to help save and protect the planets and their people from dangerous Space Pirates, to powerful Marauders and other hostile factions. Build a planetary federation as you strengthen your fleet and secure your homeworld as you attempt to preserve intergalactic peace and your vision of humanity. Set in the universe of Civilization: Beyond Earth after the age of the Seeding, Sid Meier’s Starships offers sci-fi/strategy fans a full stand-alone game experience that also features cross-connectivity with Beyond Earth, expanding the depth of both games. See if you have what it takes to rule the universe! • Tactical Space Combat: Encounter unique tactical challenges in every mission, with dynamically generated maps, victory conditions, and foes. • Fully Customizable Starships: Create an armada that fits your tactical plan with modular spaceship design. • Diplomacy, Strategy, and Exploration: Expand the influence of your Federation and gain the trust of the citizens of new planets. Use the unique abilities of the each planet to enhance your fleet and Federation, and keep your opponents in check. Build improvements on worlds to increase the capabilities and resources of your Federation. • A Galaxy Of Adventure: Explore the galaxy as you lead your fleet to distant worlds and complete missions to help the citizens of these planets. Fight pirates, protect colony ships, destroy rogue AI, and more. • Multiple Paths To Victory: Will you win by conquering the greatest threat to the galaxy? Or will you unite a plurality of worlds in your Federation? Perhaps you will lead your people to push the frontiers of science. Each choice you make carries consequences on your path to victory.

  • Great Potential but Buggy (even at 1.4) and 2K Support is Weak

I’m glad I didn’t pay more than $10 for this game; that’s about all it’s worth. Sprite clipping errors all over the place (objects showing through one another or overlapping when they’re not supposed to), buggy sound implementation and the gameplay is very one-dimensional and lacking in realism in certain respects. This has the potential to be a really good game but it’s mediocre implementation makes it the kind of game you will probably play until you beat the system once or twice at which point you’ll be bored with it. The “enemy leader” soundbites used in the Diplomacy screen are the cheeziest things I’ve ever heard, and the “graphics from the helm" when you’re about to accept a mission are equally cheesy. Both feel like they’re from the 90s. I’ve heard a lot about the greatness of Sid Meier games but this was my first and I have to say I don’t know what all the hype is about. If the Civ games are implemented anything like this one, they’re overrated.
  • not bad, but needs a little work

    By Daverunrun
Fun game that can take a short time to play or a long time. One glitch I recently noticed is that if you defeat the homeworld of an opponent and inherit their empire, it resets all your planetary defenses to zero. That can be problematic when you are fighting multiple enemies and all the sudden you have no drones to help you protect your planets. It would also be nice to see how close you and your opponents are to victory, aside from population percentage. It’s frustrating when you are playing along and the game suddenly ends when an opponent wins before you can really do anything about it. One last thing, when you set the victory conditions to one type of victory (e.g. Domination), sometimes an opponent will still win the game with a different type of victory condition.
  • unplayable on macbook

You might expect better quality in a Sid Meire game… you might be disappointed. I enjoy the game, it’s a simple waste of time, BUT it can only be played when using a mouse with the ability to right-click. The game does not understand a ‘ctl-click’ as a right click for some reason, so that leaves out my MacBook Pro, unless it’s convenient to tote around an external mouse and have a table to play on. Oddly enough, it works quite well with a wacom tablet which doesn’t exactly have a right click either. If the game had more depth it might be an issue, but after playing the game a dozen times or so on a tabletop mac i thinks i is done with it.
  • an excellent quick round of Fun!

    By SQL Guru
I’ve played 3 games and all three were more fun that I expected - until the game came to an abrupt and surprizing end announcing that the AI had won a Wonder or Population Vicoty even though it was set on Domination. Sid, please, fix the bug and release an upgrade. Update: The recent patches fixed all the issues I had with the game. Highly recommended. — long time Civ fan
  • It just OK

    By Melvin2234567
Its an ok game. The first time I played it, I had a good time. As time went on, though, it got repetitive. Like the second time I played. Battles are just hunt and destroy. There is no real diplomacy. No customization to ships and their levels are capped at 8. So all my ships are level 8 in every category now. There is a bug when you do a lot of damage to a ship it takes forever for the “Blown Up, Sir” montage to pass. The missions are repetitive. Just a so-so game.
  • Not Very Deep

    By Fadium
Civilization was great. Fairly deep, lots of things you could or could not do. This game pales by comparison: * All ships are the same - and build the same. * Graphics have many glitches (explosions taking 60 seconds - and there will be lots of them). * The kinks haven’t been worked out of basic game play (infinite loops on certain conditions, crashes). * No real variation between the group selections. * A very short play with little to no story and no flavor. * Game balance is entirely off - some “Wonders” (which are essentially technological advantages instead of anything amazing or wonderful) are entirely more powerful than others. I played it once, it was fun… for about 1.5 hours. Then I tried to play again but it was too boring.
  • Undeveloped

    By Whelm
While the graphics and gameplay are detailed and smooth this feels like a sketch of an idea for a game rather than a complete game itself. The strategy involved is minimal, the options for character/ship develompent are minimal, and the necessity for any tactics in battle are minimal as well. I’d love to see this developed though. It has the potential to be something very interesting.
  • Waste of money

    By Nickname925
I didn’t get anything out of this game. Like everyone else says, it’s hideously underdeveloped. After less than ten hours of play you’ll pretty much have the whole game figured out. I’d say it reaches less than 5% of its potential. The premise is good & some aspects are there, but there’s no depth at all. It would have barely been acceptible in the 90’s. It's boring.
  • Make sure you buy a mouse

    By Igvm
In order to play this game on macbook, you need a mouse and you need to be able to right-click. Control-click, the combination which pretty much all aplications interpret as a right-click, this game does not understand. Who develops a game for Mac and requires multi-button mouse ?
  • Cant Move!

    By Shakeing Head
This is the second game I have bought in the past 5 days that does not understand that there is no RICHT CLICK for a MAC. I am using a macbook and the mouse option is not an option. I certinaly hope someone takes the time to fix this oversight.
