Can’t believe I’m playing Layonara on my IPad

Neverwinter nights was a great online role-playing game based in the Dungeons and Dragons universe. They really did an exceptional job of capturing the idea of Dungeons and Dragons in a video game. Even better, when everyone started developing persistent worlds that you could play on! But then Wizards, stopped supporting after about 15 years, and a lot of those persistent worlds went dark. But fortunately, an excellent role-playing-based one is still up and running, among quite a few others actually, and it is truly an amazing experience. Layonara was first and foremost developed by role players for role players. There’s plenty of smashing and bashing and of course crafting, to be done as well, but it’s a great place to go IC and stay there for a little while! The players there are so nice and enjoyable to be with. Solid RPers! I played all those years ago, and then put it down when wizards stopped supporting, but I’m back again, playing on my iPad, and I’m loving every minute of it. If you’re looking for a good RP server, give Layonara a try, they make very good use of the Neverwinter nights engine! More information can be found at Discord, at Layonara, so you can get the password and get your character created. (You’ll need to create a little backstory for him or her, but if you like RP as much as I do, you will surely enjoy it!) I’m loving it! David AKA Brutus Clawfoot

Soooo GOOD even with the bugs

It’s new and it’s bound to have issues. I hate that some people give low star ratings to newer games they’re scaring away prospective players and not giving enough credit to this masterpiece of a game. I’ve been dying waiting for another Baldur’s Gate-esk game to come out on iOS, and this does not disappoint! With hours of exploration and quests what more could you ask for? I’m not a “gamer” necessarily so I appreciate the adjustable difficulty settings. Are there bugs? Yes, like for example, an item that is needed to move forward in a quest is not in the chest or on the person that it’s supposed to be on. While I’m sure these issues will be fixed as the developers are made aware, at this point I don’t mind starting all over again with the hopes that the bug won’t happen in a new game. By far my favorite developer’s and game series!

The best D&D game on iOS thus far!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the greatest Dungeons & Dragons game you can get for your mobile devices. A very good port from the original PC version. The extra modules that are available for an added purchase are phenomenal and highly recommend by this Dungeons & Dragons fan. The only game that would beat Neverwinter Nights would be D&D Online. I don’t think that will be coming out to mobile anytime soon. So, if you love the Balders Gate series to include Siege of Dragonspear, Icewind Dale and Planes of Torment, you will absolutely fall in love with Neverwinter Nights. The best role playing game on iOS mobile to date. This is a must have for all Dungeons & Dragons fans and for anyone who just likes RPG’s in general. You’ve got to get this game, it is a classic “just have” game of all times. Buy it now!!!! You’ll be happy you did. Mark my words.

10 Star version of a classic

The mages at Beam dog/Overhaul have crafted a wonderous thing! This rework of the classic BioWare game is perfect. I have gladly picked up Planescape, BG 1&2, and Icewind Dale from the same creators, and they are fantastic. This EE is beyond even those reworks. The game play/ controls are easy & the graphics capture the feel of the original while polishing some of the rough edges that were there due to the limitations of early 2000s tech. The in app purchases are well worth the $, as they expand the game further and let the player enjoy other parts of Faerun. Now if Beamdog can get Wizards to let them convert classic D&D modules to expansion packs for NN:EE, then there will truly be magic left in the world.

    The Quintessential

There are very few good RPG’s (IMHO) found within the IOS ecosystem. And yet every once in awhile I get sucker punched by quintessential grassroots RPG’s like this gem coming over. Like BG1, BG2 IWD, all Spiderware Games and most recently Atom RPG, THIS game is a staple of CRPG gaming lore. You can and WILL get lost in all the details, storylines, character builds and atmosphere. And to think- many years ago a CRPG of this caliber could only be played at a desktop or lugged around via laptop. Now...we’ve got all that RPG goodness (and vastness- 100hr +) in our pockets. Bravo Overhaul, you get my hard earned money.

Great mobile port of a classic

It’s great to load up this classic RPG on the go during a long car trip or commute. Beamdog did a great job adapting the PC classic to iOS. The combat flows pretty smoothly for a touch interface. I love Neverwinter the most out of the classic PC D&D games because of the steady flow of action in relation to the plot. Was concerned about reading tiny text on my phone screen but it feels great on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Definitely will want a bigger screen or an iPad to play on though. Highly recommend this game! Thanks for the amazing port!!!

    Crashes on saves

Update: Thank you to the developer team! The zoom setting is what was causing it. That has fixed the problem and now it works as intended. This game is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, it crashes every time you try to save, so it’s impossible to play. The crash happens no matter how you try to save, so unless you can play for the hundred ish hours of content straight through, you can never get fat in the game. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

    Good, But No Toolset

OK, actual review time. Lots of bugs. 1) The inventory radial menu icon does nothing. 2) Sometime highlights from one item appear when looking at another item from another chest. 3) There really needs to be some form of toolset implementation. 4) It still has an occasional memory leak, which was left over from. The PC/Mac game. Every once in a while, on a reload, everything drops to like 1 FPS or less. 5) The NPC AI needs to be improved a tad, your henchmen and familiars, etc. can box you into tight space and then not move. 6) You need to be able to tell familiars and animal companions to NOT attack chests. They will do it forever. 7) Marrok, the blacksmith guy, sometimes just wont make a recipe. The parts are there, he is there, but, nope– 8) The main character will often, all of a sudden, just stop doing anything when in the midst of a fight. Usually the PCs track new targets very well, but sometimes the main one just decides to stand there for a while, no condition or effect on them, and do nothing, even when gettin hit. I have tested this one a bunch. It mostly happens when a lot of action is going on. Please, make the toolset another app, and use Files to transfer new stuff to the game. It could not be that hard. The toolset is really what made this game special.

    So far so good !

EDIT: Thank you development for your response! However, I don’t see how to move the menu bar to the side . I have tried dragging it, that doesn’t work. I can’t find anything in the game options. When I click to show chat, the menu bar just disappears . My biggest complaints so far is that I can’t have the chat bar and the quick menu bar open at the same time. By this, I mean the text info on hit rolls and damage, experience , etc must be closed to have the bar that includes the buttons for inventory, character , quick save, journal etc. This causes a lot of switching back and forth . If there is a way to do this that I’m unaware of or if it’s fixed I’ll change this to a 5 star rating .

    Problem with HotU

The original campaign worked fantastically. But towards the end of HotU, in the puzzler’s room (shortly after getting past the Mimic), the lightning blocking the doorway after doesn’t disappear when completing the puzzle (triggering all three floor levers on the islands, turning the gargoyles towards the door, and then pulling the last floor lever). So the game cannot be completed. I’ve played HotU three times and get stuck in the same spot every time. Developers, please fix that bug. I do enjoy the game but would really like to finish it.

As good as I remember it with changes

Let’s be real the main campaign is ok... but that has always been the case. The real value is multi player which you can have up to 250 people on one server. I’ve seen up to 75 on a server. It’s great for a port of an old game but being and old game it lacks what we expect from modern day games. I’ll give it a five for the port but overall a four as if you are new to neverwinter you should not expect a five star game. It is a five star game from a different time in gaming.

I love this game on iPad, but HATE the camera angle

I have played NWN for years and jumped at the EE when it came out, I play it on both my iPad and my PC at home. Once I figured out to put the buttons on the left side the game is set up beautifully for chat and whatever you need in a quick click intuitive way. I love the new textures that keep coming out and all the plans for future enhancements. I wish other game companies would take a page from your book. However, I can’t give the 5 stars I really want to give, because of the steep grade of the camera angle, you are not able to target at the full extent of the range of your ranged attacks. I have found many things discussing all that need be done is change the .Ini file. I have found no way to do this on an iPad. It is very frustrating how close I have to be before I can target. The second camera issue would be resolved by decreasing the angle of the default camera to be just a little more behind, instead of above the character. I tried the camera in Follow, Drive and default, all of the options and Could not increase my range of sight. Still, the trees blocked the camera, allowing only the small bubble of sight. I do love everything else about the way NWN ee plays on the iPad, but the shortened range of sight is really terrible. Please look into changing the default for iPad users. Thank you.

Great game, good port, UX issues, slow updates

First: the game is great, if dated. I won’t review the game itself here as there is plenty out there about it. Short version: it’s great. The port to iOS is mostly good. The major feature of NWN, custom modules and content, is supported just the same as the PC version, though you will have to jump through a few hoops with iTunes file sharing for all but the simplest modules. The bad is the interface, which is woefully unacceptable on my iPad at least. The hot bar is drawn to the very edge of the screen and often fails to register taps. You must either choose between the chat/combat log OR the menu buttons. You can’t have both. The original is HEAVILY designed for a two-button mouse, which of course is impossible on the iPad, so right-click is emulated with a long tap. And you need to right click. All. The. Time. A “smart click” that right-clicked on single tap for certain interactions would have been lovely. The iOS version is also quite far behind the PC in version number. Which is to be expected to some extent, but with no updates published in over two months, I’m beginning to wonder.

Almost there but for the camera

Having spent many hours playing over one hundred modules created by the nwn community in my youth, I purchased this version to play the original campaign which I have never finished. While this seems to be a very good rendering of the game, the one real issue for me is that I can not unlock the camera. For some this may not be an issue if they like to play from a top down perspective. However, for those who believe that the only way to play nwn is from first person perspective because it is more immersive, then they may find the lack of control over the camera a bit frustrating. If this issue could be fixed, it would take the game to another level.
