Video Manual: How to Use the TCGplayer App

How does it Work?

Fully Integrated Scanning - Scan Magic, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards to instantly find prices, sell and shop on TCGplayer.com, add to your collection—even create Trade-In submissions for your Magic cards.

Fast, Accurate Pricing - Choose between Mid, Low, Direct Low and Market Price—plus Trade-In High for Magic—to see current TCGplayer price data.

Scan to Sell - Create a listing with photos from your mobile device by snapping pictures and publishing your listing through the app.

Manage Your Collection - Create new decklists or import lists you’ve saved from previous versions of the TCGplayer App. You can also rename or duplicate lists and share them with your friends via email or another app.

Accurate Image Recognition - Whether you scan cards right-side up or upside down, in sleeves or in a binder, the app will quickly and correctly identify them. Just make sure you scan at a 45° angle and use a plain background that contrasts with the card border.

Set Printing, Condition & More - Find the price for the exact version of the card you have by selecting whether or not it’s foil, what condition it’s in and what language it is.

Works with Non-English Cards - It doesn’t matter if you can’t read the text on the card. The app will tell you what it is and how much it’s worth.

Scans Several Cards at Once - The app will scan as many cards as you can fit within your camera’s field of view. Just make sure the entire card is in frame and avoid obstructions.

    Excellent app! Highly recommended!

I typically only write a review on the App Store if an app has gone above expectations or if it disappointed me. This time around, the app deserved 5 stars! The app is great for finding current values within a multitude of different card conditions. And it’s also great to have a catalog, per expansion, with said values. But today, just for fun, I wanted to just put all my decks into a collection to see if the value has increased/decreased. And the app is great for cataloguing everything with your camera! The only people who give this app a bad rating, are entitled brats who don’t understand the process of developing and running a FREE APP. *mic drop

    Great app could be better

I love using this app for cataloguing my decks and binder, but I would love to use this for my whole entire collection but adding thousands of cards can be a nightmare with this app. I want to preface this with the fact that I’m very grateful for this app. There isn’t another one that stays as up to date with the cards and has as good of a system. The one thing I would love is a way to interface this with my computer very well. Wether be the app or my phone (iPhone 12) but cataloguing so many cards heats up my phone and lags it very bad and also crashes the app. Also while the scanner is very good, with a lot of newer sets it never scans the set right and changing every single card I scan can be a nightmare with the card setting interface. They are all slight and small little issues that don’t matter much but after the thousandth card really gets to me. If there was an option just like the option to make every scan foil but makes every scan always part of a specific set, that would be nice. My biggest thing though, if I could scan with my phone and make all the adjustments and the database on my computer that would be a dream come true!! Thank you for the great app and hopefully my voice is heard. 💕

Overall, a very good app (pokemon collector)

It’s a great app/site for buying/appraising cards. The addition of “latest sales” is amazing. The scanning tool is incredibly useful for pokemon (although it has a bit of trouble with reverse holos/full arts). There are 3 QOL improvements I can think of. 1) A search bar in the collection tab. Having to always sort by alphabetical can get a little annoying. 2) Labeling the card version in “Latest sales.”There is currently no way to differentiate between different printings in the latest sales (1st edition, holofoil, etc) which can make appraising some cards a little difficult. 3) Pokémon specific: a filter for world championship cards. Anyways, love the site, awesome job tcgplayer team.

Not much more than a bookmark for now

I’m fairly certain that the feedback team will send the generic response to this. The app is likable with easy access to the cards. There’s some great features that make life very simple for the buyer and seller interested in cards. It provides great service while doing the function of a mobile store. In certain cases, I do find difficulties with load times. This is more so on the ISP than on the app itself. The fact that databases can be updated to support increased speed in which the app can be accessed is nice. It’s a decent compromise. Great work on that part. The glaring issue is that the product variety on the scanner is very limited to the three listed card games. While nice, this inherently restricts the user to only three card games. I’m assuming that this is being worked on to accommodate the listed games and more. Also on that note, I would like to have the option of picking and choosing frequently used databases to increase speed. There are some card games that people don’t play, thus eliminating the need for that particular data update. It might be best for those that have an account and would like to have that access through the settings menu. For example, if a person plays MTG and Pokémon, but not Yu-Gi-Oh, you can have that database be removed from the update package.

Pretty good but far too laggy

I do like the TCGplayer app. It’s convenient to have an app to easily access the price of cards. It’s also an incredibly useful tool as a seller. The huge, glaring issue with the app is its lag/consistency. The app is usually quite slow. Occasionally it straight up drops connection (tested on stable internet against a computer accessing the website). There are times where it would load the frame but not the actual prices and sellers. It’s hard to quickly look something up for a trade, especially if you have to jump through extra hoops to find the price guide when searching normally doesn’t work. As it stands, I don’t recommend this as a quick reference tool. This app should only be used by sellers that want to check their inventory. Mobile buys can use it, too but really only should when you absolutely want to use TCGplayer.

    Good enough but rough edges

The app does a lot of great stuff in how it integrates with TCGPlayer’s site but it has a number of shortcomings. The scanner on this app is very finicky and slow. I’ve given up on trying to scan any pre8th edition black cards entirely and green or blue can be inconsistent. If MTGManager didn’t have such a quick and consistent scanner I’d let it slide. That said, MTGManager also charges for stuff & this app is fully free. I don’t know how your scanner works but if it doesn’t already do it I’d suggest having it read the card text and comparing it to an existing database to help narrow down the possible cards. At bare minimum you’d get the right card but wrong version sometimes. It would be nice if the app had slightly more sorting options. The ability to sort the cards you’ve added to a binder with even these minor options would be amazing: Alphabetical Number of copies Set name Card type Date added Value Also the ability to search to see if a card is in your collection could be a nice addition. Or even just manually moving cards up or down the list. Overall it’s a pretty good app, and it’s hard to complain when it’s FREE. I just want some improvements. The scanner stuff could be tough but just improving sorting alone would make me immensely happy

This could be 5 stars except laziness

I love the app, but it often recognized editions wrong, which I’m still fine with (I’m not expecting perfection with so many card variants) but let’s use “Siren’s Call” as an example. I scan it in and it comes up as 4th. Mine is unlimited so I push the button to change it, but I can’t because the choice of unlimited is “beyond the range” of the selection screen. I can pull it up enough to see it but as soon as I try to select it by taking my finger off the screen from scrolling it “snaps up” 3-4 places so I can’t choose it any more. World Championship, Urza, unlimited and others are affected by this. It’s not every card, some are formatted correctly so I can choose it. Someone is obviously just lazy with formatting. It’s a shame since it is a good app otherwise.

Good for MTG, useless for Pokémon

I use the app to scan my MTG cards, and it works great. I do wish the option to select which set you are scanning from, as quite often it will select the card from the wrong set and I have to go back and change them to the correct one. When it does this and I have a copy of the correct card from the correct set and it adds the wrong set I have to go in and remove the incorrect one and add one to the right set. It’s pretty annoying and I don’t think it would be all that difficult to give us the option of selecting the set we’re scanning cards from. That being said, the app absolutely will NOT scan new Pokémon cards (Sun & Moon series) no matter how I tilt my phone, flash on or off, say a prayer or do a dance, it will not scan them.. at all. Pretty irritating to be honest.

    Slow and buggy

The idea of an app is great but when you’re using it and trying to type in the search bar it’ll sometimes drop the search as you’re typing causing you to click on something else by accident and then takes a very long time to load most pages. The filter is messed up as well. You can click on a filter tad, say at the top, and it’ll select something at the bottom. You can try to scroll down on the filter tab and for some reason it scrolls up. I just don’t understand these bugs. They make the app actually unusable at times. The only convenient thing about it is I don’t have to open a web browser to search the online site. (Which runs faster and smoother)

    High Hopes

I desperately want to have a single app for card collection management and sales. I thought this could be it, but it doesn’t quite make the grade yet. Here are some concerns (some apply to tcgplayer’s website as a whole): - the app crashes during card uploads for lists (this could be fixed by allowing users to upload lists as csvs on the regular website, whether it be collections or trade-ins) - there is no easy way to clear a buylist. This is infuriating when you go above your total allowable cards. This is compounded by not being able to see exactly how many cards are in your buylist. Some sort of count of cards would be an easy bandaid solution that could be implemented as a more permanent solution is created. - some actions do not even work. I have tried several times to add part of my collection list to trade in, with no error but no cards in the trade in cart. This seems to be a huge problem that may affect other functions. Please investigate! Although I provide criticisms above, I do like the app in general and hope for marked improvements to the app and the website as a whole.

    Suits its Purpose

Pros: Really easy card lookup Meh: Scanner is still hit/miss even with good angles/surfaces/backgrounds Cons: Too easy to make mistakes with selling cards/ safeguards There are some things I like about the app, and other things i don’t. The scanning is alright, but I find remembering card names better/ more efficient especially if you run across cards a lot repetitively. Also, when viewing more information about a card, I would often hit the buttons underneath the card’s name. The three options to either buy it or sell/trade. It made me nervous/anxious/furious that these buttons shouldn’t be an option unless you’re sure 100% you’re ready to get rid of selected card. It gives your card base an approximate value of what’s it worth if you separate your pool of cards into a deck list, although separating your collection into various decklists can get confusing, especially if you’re experimenting with new deck ideas. I feel all-in-all, app is a bit too trigger-happy. One wrong tap, swipe, or misunderstanding can really make a bad day.

    Extremely helpful, but very buggy

As far as scanning cards go this is a great feature, but this frequently gets the set of scanned cards incorrect and correcting the set has to be done one-by-one, which is made even more time consuming on an IPhone X where the “x” to close card pages is hidden behind the time at the top left of these “notched” phones. I am also having an incredibly strange bug where I cannot read any of the settings for the app that contain an on and off slider. I can see the sliders in a list view in the options, but each row is completely blank so I cannot see what I am turning on and off. Searching in the normal TCGplayer website in this app is frustrating as well. The keyboard frequently shuts itself for no reason, loading seems to take ages in comparison to using the normal browser on my phone, and the layout of most pages still being exactly the same as desktop layout just zoomed out makes searching a complete nightmare, something that would likely be the reason most people download this app. All in all, this app’s potential is game-changing for those of us who sell cards. Scanning is second to none and I am hopeful for the ability to on the fly list scanned cards for sale without having to upload pictures. If even just some of these bugs are fixed this app would be outstanding for TCG players.

    Unfortunately disappointed

I wanna preface this by saying, I really love tcg and selling with them. The app is set up with the illusion of ease of use. But i found it more fluid to manually input on my laptop then to use the seller portal on the app...for two reasons..that if could be fixed would leave this app a must have for all tcg users. 1. Ability to add the entire list of cards created from the scanning option to your seller portal..this would make it much less tedious 2. Ability to use the photo provided by the server when adding cards to online store...when posting on my computer I’m not required to take a photo (just state truthfully the condition)...when required to take a photo for every card on the app it makes the speed and ease of use absolutely obsolete I love the idea of this app. If those issues could be fixed it would be a perfect streamlining option to add bulk cards to sellers online stores. Other than that it is not of much use to me or I think others over simply using their website.

    Way too much lag

Do not get this app. If you want the app to make your shopping experience more convenient on your phone, you’re much better off using their website on safari. I attempted using this app for about 30 minutes in an area with good service, connected to good WiFi, and clicking on anything (the search bar, a card listing, my cart, etc) would make the app just stop and think about what it’s doing for a good 10 seconds each time. After going through this for about 30 different cart options, thinking “I’m already this far, might as well keep going”, my cart was suddenly emptied with no trace of the items. I’ve deleted the app and I hope these concerns are dealt with eventually, because this app could be very useful in the future once they are.
